Bucks run gamut of emotions into playoffs - Sun Sentinel

PLANTATION ? It was quite a night for Deerfield Beach football.

Elation. Devastation. A playoff berth snatched. A district title snatched away.

Yep, the three-way District 11-8A tiebreaker between Deerfield Beach, South Plantation and Taravella was every bit as wild as you?d expect a high-stakes mini-tournament of one-quarter matchups to be.

Both ?games? -- between Deerfield Beach and Taravella, then Deerfield Beach and South Plantation ? ended up requiring extra action to decide the outcome.
The Bucks beat the Trojans 7-0 in overtime and lost to the Paladins 3-0 in overtime.

?It?s tough to play both back-to-back like that, but we took them to the brink,? Deerfield Beach coach Allen Jackson said. ?I?m very proud of my kids. A lot of people said we wouldn?t get to the playoffs, but we got there.?

After Deerfield Beach and Taravella each punted on their first possession Monday night, Deerfield drove to Taravella?s 21-yard line before Artez Levine?s third-and-long pass was intercepted near the goal line by Lorenzo Jerome.

Taravella was stopped on its next possession, but successfully converted a fake punt when Jerome took the snap, scrambled and fired a lateral to Anthony Pallozzi, who raced for the first down. But three plays later, on first-and-10 from Deerfield?s 32, Jerome threw a pick to Shaquille Lindo.

Deerfield?s 52-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds left was blocked.

After Brandon Powell rushed for a 10-yard touchdown in overtime, Deerfield?s Lajavius Thompson crushed Taravella?s Davory McKoy as he was trying to make the tying touchdown catch in the end zone and Justin Morgan intercepted the ball.

?I knew I was going to knock it out,? Thompson said. ?I?m a big-time player. Big-time players make big-time plays. We needed that and we got it done.?

In their next matchup, the Bucks held Paladins running back Alex Collins to 13 yards on four carries and forced a punt. They took over at their own 19 yard line with 8:24 left and nearly used up all of that time.

They ran the ball nine consecutive plays with Powell and Aeron McNeal before Levine completed a 9-yard pass to Morgan on fourth-and-1 from the Paladins? 33.

But the Bucks wound up settling for a 26-yard field goal attempt with nine second left, which Kris Rosales missed wide left.

In overtime, Levine completed a 9-yard pass on third down to set up fourth-and-goal from the 5.

Jackson said he considered going for the win, but opted for the game-tying 22-yard field goal, which was blocked.

The Bucks couldn?t produce their dream ending Monday night, but they ensured their season will end in the playoffs.
