MLB moving towards 21st century with bullpen cell phones | But at ...

No need for me to use these anymore.

Wireless technology for bullpen phones.

Major League Baseball and T-Mobile have struck a deal and through this deal, it looks like bullpen phones will now be used by cell phones.

Under the agreement, T-Mobile will provide MLB with a new On-Field Communication System, powered by T-Mobile?s powerful nationwide network technology. The first use of this technology will be in a wireless voice system connecting managers in select Major League dugouts to coaches in bullpens. This dugout-to-bullpen system will start to roll out in 2013 and the new On-Field Communication System solution will offer greater mobility as well as options for future innovation within the game.

This is pretty special for baseball as they are trying to take advantage of new technologies. After all, these bullpen phones haven?t always been reliable. And now, we have at least a system where such an occurence can be avoided. (And the old phones will still be an option if teams want them.)

What?s also pretty neat is that the phones they are using will also be the same ones that consumers can buy too.

Hello? Warm up Mariano Rivera.

With private cell towers for these phones to prevent any kind of frequency issues, we have a screen shot of the?Samsung Galaxy 3 phone that will use the 4G system.

I?d like to imagine also that these phones would also have texting options too. It would be pretty neat to relay a message early in the game just in case the manager might forget to remind the bullpen later in the game.

I do wonder if these phones will just have the option to call. Would it be possible to surf the net on these phones? If that?s the case, could the manager use it to go online and look up stats on the opponents during the game for strategy purposes?

What about seeking advice? Could there be a way where the team asks the audience on social media about a certain approach late in the game and the manager can?gauge?into the public?s perception?

Could this lead to maybe a manager or even a player in the pen using it to communicate via Twitter or Facebook, or even upload videos during the game?

The cell phone usage for the bullpen is one step in the right direction but I expect with this deal with T-Mobile, we?ll have a lot more possibilities if Internet usage is also available.

Plus, I hope this gives us more of Canadian supermodel Carly Foulkes.
