U.N. envoy says Security Council must act on Syria: report

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United Nations peace envoy to Syria said the Security Council must act to end the country's civil war because Syrians could not stop the violence on their own, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

More than 60,000 people have died and 700,000 have fled the country in the 22-month-old conflict but the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council have been deadlocked on how to negotiate an end to the war.

Lakhdar Brahimi, appointed as mediator in August, said it had become clear the Syrian parties in the conflict were not going to resolve it on their own.

"Now we are speaking with the Security Council, and I told them honestly that the brothers in Syria are unable to talk and resolve their problems themselves," he told the Arabic-language daily newspaper daily al-Hayat.

"There is no other arena now to deal with this issue and seek the salvation of Syria except through the Security Council."

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's most powerful foreign backer, Russia, has vetoed three resolutions aimed at putting pressure on the Syrian leader to end the conflict.

The United States and most Western countries have largely backed the rebels, who are trying to end more than four decades of rule by Assad and his family.

World powers formally accepted a transitional plan for Syria in June, but Brahimi said the wording had left deliberate ambiguity over Assad's role during a transitional period.

Differences between Washington and Moscow later resurfaced and Brahimi said this "constructive ambiguity" had to end.

The newspaper said Brahimi has presented six points to the Security Council for a resolution, including adopting a "principle of dialogue" among Syrians, but did not take a ceasefire as a starting point.

"The fighter will not agree to stop fighting unless he knows where he is headed. People want to know where they are headed," he said, declining to go into details about what he presented.

On Tuesday, Brahimi warned the Security Council that Syria is "breaking up before everyone's eyes," diplomats told Reuters.

Diplomats have said Brahimi has grown extremely frustrated at the inability of the Security Council to unite behind him. His predecessor, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, voiced similar frustration when he resigned in August.

Yes, according to The Sun. The British tabloid reported that the pair has recently bonded over the breakup of their marriages and a shared love of yoga.

The report suggests that the two stars might be more than just good friends, referencing a January 19 date to the Stanley Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The New York Post, however, noted that Moore's rumored new beau -- 31-year-old restaurateur Harry Morton -- accompanied them on the outing, suggesting that the actress' budding relationship with Brand is likely a platonic one.

Moore announced her split from Kutcher in November 2011, amid reports of the "Two and a Half Men" actor's infidelity. He filed for divorce from Moore more than a year later in December 2012.

Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry in December 2011 after just 14 months of marriage. The two finalized their split in July 2012.

Taking the stairs, raking leaves may have same health benefits as a trip to the gym

Jan. 28, 2013 ? New research at Oregon State University suggests the health benefits of small amounts of activity -- even as small as one- and two-minute increments that add up to 30 minutes per day -- can be just as beneficial as longer bouts of physical exercise achieved by a trip to the gym.

The nationally representative study of more than 6,000 American adults shows that an active lifestyle approach, as opposed to structured exercise, may be just as beneficial in improving health outcomes, including preventing metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

"Our results suggest that engaging in an active lifestyle approach, compared to a structured exercise approach, may be just as beneficial in improving various health outcomes," said Paul Loprinzi, lead author of the study. "We encourage people to seek out opportunities to be active when the choice is available. For example, rather than sitting while talking on the phone, use this opportunity to get in some activity by pacing around while talking."

Perhaps just as importantly, the researchers found that 43 percent of those who participated in the "short bouts" of exercise met physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes day. In comparison, less than 10 percent of those in the longer exercise bouts met those federal guidelines for exercise.

Loprinzi, who is an assistant professor at Bellarmine University, conducted the research as a doctoral student working in the lab of Brad Cardinal at Oregon State University. Cardinal, a professor of exercise and sport science, is co-author of the study, which is in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion.

"You hear that less than 10 percent of Americans exercise and it gives the perception that people are lazy," Cardinal said. "Our research shows that more than 40 percent of adults achieved the exercise guidelines, by making movement a way of life."

Cardinal, who has studied the "lifestyle exercise" model for more than 20 years, said one of the most common barriers people cite to getting enough exercise is lack of time. He said the results of this study are promising, and show that simply building movement into everyday activities can have meaningful health benefits.

"This is a more natural way to exercise, just to walk more and move around a bit more," Cardinal said. "We are designed by nature as beings who are supposed to move. People get it in their minds, if I don't get that 30 minutes, I might as well not exercise at all. Our results really challenge that perception and give people meaningful, realistic options for meeting the physical activity guidelines."

For example, Cardinal said instead of driving half a mile, try biking or walking the same distance; instead of using a riding lawn mower, use a push lawn mower. Instead of sitting through TV commercials, try doing some sit-ups, push-ups, or jumping jacks during the commercial breaks; and instead of sitting and being a spectator at a child's sporting event, try walking around during the halftime break.

The researchers said the participants in this study wore accelerometers, which is an objective tool to measure physical activity. Those who participated in the short bouts of activity could be moving as few as one or two minutes at a time. The people in the "short bouts" group had positive results in areas such as blood pressure, cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and waist circumference.

For instance, the study showed those in the shorter exercise group who met physical activity guidelines had an 89 percent chance of not having metabolic syndrome, compared to 87 percent for those meeting guidelines using the structured exercise approach.

Loprinzi said the one area where small bursts of activity did not seem to equal the benefits of longer, sustained exercise was in Body Mass Index, or BMI. However, the researchers cautioned that these findings do not necessarily mean that short bouts of activity do not help with weight loss, especially since they did find a benefit on weight circumference.

"There are inherent limitations in BMI as a surrogate measure of fat and health in general," Cardinal said. "People can still be 'fit' and 'fat.'"

The researchers emphasized that for health benefits, people should seek out opportunities to be physically active.

"In our society, you will always be presented with things that entice you to sit or be less active because of technology, like using a leaf blower instead of a rake," Cardinal said. "Making physical activity a way of life is more cost-effective than an expensive gym membership. You may be more likely to stick with it, and over the long term, you'll be healthier, more mobile and just feel better all around."

People who went through a foreclosure early in the recession are now qualifying for mortgage loans to buy houses in the Valley again.

Read my story, which appeared on Sunday?s Business page, about two Valley couples who repaired their credit and waited three years to jump back into the home buying market. There?s some information from loan officers too on what lenders are looking for.

But here?s a little more detail about qualifying for a loan from Academy Mortgage sales manager Lisa Sasaki:

The three-year waiting period starts from the date the lender takes the property back, not the date of the actual foreclosure. We all know foreclosures can be a lengthy process.

After three years, buyers can qualify for a mortgage loan that is backed by the Federal Housing Administration which only requires a 3.5% down payment. A traditional loan with a 20% down payment has a seven-year wait time after foreclosure.

Those who went through a short sale, however, and are looking to put a 20% down payment on a new house only have to wait two to three years, Sasaki said.

First Cal Mortgage branch manager Sean Connolly said it?s possible for people who went through a short sale to buy a new home almost immediately without waiting if they continued to pay their monthly mortgage on time up until the close of ?escrow on the short sale.

?People were given bad advice on how to go about doing their short sale,? Connolly said. ?Had they gone to a lender first, a mortgage banker and gotten the proper advice, they could have purchased a home after their short sale.?

Market Profile?
?Netflix, a company that specializes in DVD rentals and video streaming, has been in business since 1997. Being one of the first to enter the online video rental industry, Netflix dominates market share at 55 percent (Chang). Still, market share is declining from its peak market share of nearly 60%. The company made 3.54 billion in revenue in 2012 with a 32.92% three-year growth rate (Netflix Revenue).

Even though Netflix doesn?t have an official published mission statement, it does have vision. Co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings described the future of Netflix at the Dublin Founders conference in October, 2011. He said that Netflix aims to become the best global entertainment distribution service; licensing entertainment content around the world. Netflix desires to create markets that are accessible to film makers and expand services to a global audience (Netflix Movie Rentals Mission Statement).

The Star, Cash Cow, Question Mark, and Dog
The BCG Matrix (Fig. 1) shows for distinctive sections: the star, the cash cow, the question mark, and the dog. On the left side we see the star and cash cow; products that bring the most profit to Neflix. Netflix's streaming service is clearly the cash cow. Available on devices such as internet connected TVs, Blu-ray disc players, game consoles, computers, smartphones, and tablets, Netflix's streaming service is accessible to 30 million members globally (Company Timeline).

Netflix's star, originally developed in 2000 and massively enhanced in 2009 by the Netflix prize-winning BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos team, is its recommendation system. This crowd-sourced program uses past viewing preferences to anticipate viewers' likes and dislikes. It will soon be integrated with Facebook sharing; allowing even more personalized and accurate suggestions for patrons (Company Timeline).

On the right side we see products that are less profitable, but may serve a purpose in the market: the question mark and the dog. Netflix's question mark is the development and licensing of exclusive streaming content. Hastings characterized Netflix as "a leading global Internet TV network" and he expects to double to triple the audience of HBO (Roettgers).

Lastly, Blu-ray and DVD mailing services are Netflix's dog. In 2011 subscriptions were separated from streaming services and have since been experiencing a decline (Nakashima). Further diminishing the value of this service, Netflix competitor Redbox will be launching Redbox Instant that offers streaming service combined with DVD or Blu-ray rentals for a lower price (Will Redbox Instant Be a Netflix Killer?).

Plan of Resource Allocation
Streaming and new content are the main services customers desire. Physical DVD's and Blu-ray rentals are becoming outdated. Netflix's recommendation system adds value for both customers and content licensers. It provides a sustainable competitive advantage over competitors like Hulu and Crackle and an avenue for marketing (Kalogeropoulos). It delivers information to customers; making content accessible. Still, without streaming and fresh new programming, this program is extraneous. Netflix should allocate the majority of its resources to streaming and secondly to programming. Netflix should continue to invest in modernizing the recommendation system to change with the market so that it communicates and delivers content to members; especially as Redbox and other competitors are putting more pressure on Netflix to offer value to its customers.

Growth Strategy and One-Year Press Frequency Analysis
Netflix has been focusing bringing attention to all four areas of growth strategy, but the frequency analysis shows that Netflix's market strategy is strongly focused on product development (found in Appendix A and B). Netflix shared 29 press releases between 2012 and 2013 that related to its growth strategy. Four articles relate to market development and diversification, and seven articles relate to market penetration. But, thirteen articles relate to product development. Half of these articles showed a focus on offering new content or services to current patrons (Netflix: Media Center). The overall number of product development articles that were issued by Netflix in the last year supports the conclusion that Netflix is focused on offering new, exclusive programming to their target market of streaming subscribers. The original shows and movies provided by the Time Warner and Disney partnerships and offered though newly developed streaming technology creates greater value for current customers, but Netflix has also began offering current services through new forms of media to diversify. Netflix has expanded to Europe and Latin America and reached out to the hearing impaired community to develop new markets. Meanwhile Netflix is attempting to deemphasize physical media and shift toward a media streaming. In conclusion, Netflix has a strong product development strategy but does not lose sight on other aspects of growth in the process.
