Steelers QB Roethlisberger testing hurt shoulder

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Ben Roethlisberger doesn't sound like a guy who plans on playing against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The injured Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback said Thursday he's still in significant pain from the sprained right shoulder and dislocated ribs that have forced him to sit out Pittsburgh's last two games.

Roethlisberger said "there's always a chance" he could play against the Ravens but isn't sure his injured arm will cooperate. When asked if the issue is pain or arm strength, Roethlisberger said "both."

The Steelers (6-5) are 0-2 since Roethlisberger left in the third quarter of a 16-13 overtime win against Kansas City on Nov. 12. It's unlikely Pittsburgh can catch the Ravens (9-2) even with a win this week, but Roethlisberger said that won't affect the team's decision on whether to rest him another week or not.

Polar ice melting faster than thought, scientists warn

What had been a blurry picture about polar ice ? especially how it impacts sea levels ? just got a whole lot clearer as experts on Thursday published a peer-reviewed study they say puts to rest the debate over whether the poles added to, or subtracted from, sea level rise over the last two decades.

Energy Bill for 'cleaner economy'

Energy Secretary Ed Davey says the Bill will transform the energy landscape

Energy minister Ed Davey has unveiled the government's much-trailed Energy Bill, setting out the roadmap for the UK's switch to "a low-carbon economy".

Energy firms can increase the "green" levy from ?3bn to ?7.6bn a year by 2020, potentially increasing household bills by ?100.

But big, energy-intensive companies could be exempt from the extra costs of the switch to renewable energy.

There are also proposals for financial incentives to reduce energy demand.

The "transformation" will cost the UK ?110bn over ten years, Mr Davey said.

He told MPs: "Britain's energy sector is embarking on a period of exceptional renewal and expansion.

"The scale of the investment required is huge, representing close to half the UK's total infrastructure investment pipeline."

The government's plan formed the "biggest transformation of Britain's electricity market since privatisation," he said.

Measures proposed in the Bill and consultations include:

  • Household energy bills to rise ?100 on average by 2020
  • "Green" levy charged by energy firms to rise from ?3bn to ?7.6bn
  • Switch to clean energy to cost ?110bn over ten years
  • Bill aims to encourage investment in low-carbon power production
  • Energy-intensive companies may be exempt from additional charges
  • Possible financial incentives to reduce energy consumption

Mr Davey said government policy was "designed specifically to reduce consumer bills", arguing that without a move to renewable energy, bills would be higher because of a reliance on expensive and volatile gas prices.

Analysis

The government has unveiled plans to exempt some of Britain's biggest industries from charges for clean electricity.

The Energy Bill confirms that households will be expected to pay about ?100 a year on average to get more power from nuclear and renewables.

But it looks as though energy intensive firms won't have to pay the extra charges. It's feared that if their energy bills rise too high, they'll move manufacturing jobs abroad.

The move may prove controversial with consumer groups.

The Bill confirms that households would provide ?7.6bn of subsidy to nuclear and renewables by 2020 to keep the lights on and to meet targets on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

The government says the investment will shield the UK from volatile gas prices and force down costs in the long run.

But ministers have also announced that some of biggest industrial polluters in the UK - like steel and cement - may not be asked to pay extra. These global firms threaten to take their jobs elsewhere if power bills rise.

The government has recognised that if you are trying to cut global emissions of carbon, it's futile driving away firms to pollute somewhere else. But many households may wonder why they're being forced to pay extra whilst big firms are not.

Follow Roger on Twitter @rogerharrabin

The Energy Bill aims to move the UK's energy production from a dependence on fossil fuels to a more diverse mix of energy sources, such as wind, nuclear and biomass.

This is to fill the energy gap from closing a number of coal and nuclear power stations over the next two decades, and to meet the government's carbon dioxide emissions targets.

By allowing energy companies to charge more, the government hopes they will have the confidence to invest the huge sums of money that are needed to build renewable energy infrastructure such as windfarms.

But the opposition said that investment in renewable energy had fallen under the coalition.

"The reason that's happened is because of the uncertainty the government has created - that's why firms have put investment on hold, or scrapped it altogether," said shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint.

She added that the absence of a carbon cap for the energy sector for 2030 further undermined investment in renewables.

Exemptions

But in a consultation paper published alongside the Bill, Mr Davey said energy-intensive industries, such as steel and cement producers, would be exempt from additional costs arising from measures to encourage investment in new low-carbon production.

"Decarbonisation should not mean deindustrialisation", Mr Davey said.

"The transition to the low carbon economy will depend on products made by energy intensive industries - a wind turbine for example needing steel, cement and high-tech textiles.

"This exemption will ensure the UK retains the industrial capacity to support a low carbon economy."

Without the exemption, the government fears big companies would cut jobs and relocate abroad.

Reducing demand

The government proposals to reduce electricity demand include financial incentives for consumers and businesses alike.

Shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint says the bill will see consumers will facing higher prices

For example, firms could be paid for each kilowatt-hour they save as a result of taking energy-reduction measures, such as low-energy lighting.

Householders and businesses could be given discounts and incentives to replace old equipment with more energy-efficient versions.

The government believes a 10% reduction in electricity demand could save ?4bn by 2030.

But research by management consultancy McKinsey suggests there is the potential to reduce demand by as much as 26%, equivalent to 92 terawatt-hours, or the electricity generated by nine power stations in one year.

Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at Consumer Focus, said: "The government's commitment to reduce energy demand through incentives for consumers and businesses is welcome.

"But it will come at a cost - which again will be passed onto customers."

Flowing lithium atoms form accidental transistor

Transistors are at the heart of the electronic circuits that make modern computers possible. Now a transistor that controls the flow of atoms, rather than electrons, could be used as a model to probe the mysterious electrical property of superconductivity.

"We can test concepts for quantum electronics," says Tilman Esslinger at the Institute for Quantum Electronics in Zurich, Switzerland, who has created the transistor-like object from flowing atoms and light.

Thanks to quantum-mechanical effects, below a certain critical temperature some materials become superconducting: electrons flow through them unhindered by the usual electrical resistance. Because of this, superconductors potentially have many novel applications, such as energy-efficient data centres. But how best to design them for such applications is not known.

One way to gain a better understanding is to build a model using an analogous process called superfluidity. Rather like electrons flowing without electrical resistance, at temperatures close to absolute zero, some atoms turn superfluid, flowing with no friction or physical resistance.

Cigar channel

Esslinger and his colleagues wondered if they could observe the transition from non-superfluid to superfluid, and use this as a model for studying the onset of superconductivity. In doing so, they inadvertently created a device that was the atomic equivalent of a transistor.

Electrical transistors consist of a source and a drain, connected by a semiconducting channel. A voltage applied via a gate sitting above the channel changes the channel's resistance, either impeding or allowing current to flow. Without meaning to, Esslinger's team created what amounts to an atomic analogue of this using optical trapping, in which criss-crossing laser beams are used to corral ultracold atoms.

By strategically placing laser beams between a source of gaseous lithium atoms cooled to just 500 nano-degrees above absolute zero, and a reservoir that they could drain into, they created a cigar-shaped channel between the two. Made entirely of light, the channel was 200 micrometres long and 20 wide at its widest point.

Atomic current

As a superfluid, atoms could flow down this channel, from the source to the drain. But the researchers were able to switch the flow off using several more lasers. One was shone at the centre of the cigar, the equivalent of physically pinching the flow of atoms. A second laser, the gate beam, then controlled how tightly this first laser pinched, effectively closing the channel.

When closed, the ultracold lithium gas built up and lost its superfluid properties ? but when the channel was opened again, the lithium rapidly recovered superfluid, resistance-free flow. This atomic "current" resembled the switchable electric current in a conventional transistor.

The device is unlikely to show up in a computer anytime soon. Instead, the team hopes to use their transistor-like system to simulate superconducting devices of the future. As atoms are much larger than electrons, they are much easier to observe.

Her hand trembled as she gripped the arrow that was invisible to the human she loved.
Tears leaked from her eyes as he held her close, and she held the arrow, point first behind his back.
He knew what was coming, but was sure it would seal their fate together. He was so wrong.
Her face stayed blank, her mouth silent despite the tears falling freely from her eyes as she drove the arrow through her love's heart.
It disappeared into him, and he suddenly jerked back. The strong, all-consuming love he felt for her suddenly gone and replaced with impossibly strong hate, he bitterly shoved her away and left her crumpled on the floor, collapsed within herself.

The Archers

Every century or so, there is a a new archer. Archers are a beautifully, shattered, broken, cursed species. As legend goes, an angel was gifted with love. It was impossible for the other angels not to love and cherish the young girl. But she wanted real, undying devotion. She fell in love with a human.

After years of trying, she made me perfect arrow infused with her own blood. Love. If shot, the person and the next person they saw or touched would become soulmates. She shot the human, thinking he would fall in love with her, but it had the opposite affect. She was being punished for being so selfish- because she used the arrow on herself, God made the human reject the beautiful angel's love, and instead fall in love with another human. She rejected God, ripping out her own wings then killing the human and his lover. The only reason the selfish, vain angel didn't kill herself was because she carried his child.

Of corse, she was harshly punished. Her child, and all her descendants were cursed to have the same fate as her. All would be female. Falling in love with a human, shooting them with an arrow, eventually ripping out their own wings and murdering the man they so loved, and giving birth to his daughter and dying in childbirth. And so the cycle repeats, on an endless, bloody, terrible loop.

Eventually, the angels developed. Changed. They were no longer as vain as their ancestor, even though they knew they would face the same fate as her. They had pure souls. They created more arrows, shooting alone, empty souls and filling them with love and light for another human. They worked on angels, too, but not an angel and a human. After all, relationships between angels and humans were strictly forbidden.

But on to our story. The latest generation was different. Twins were born. One male, one female. Both were the most amazing archers seen- with completely equal power. As the female grows, they know she will face the same fate as her ancestors. She will end up as a tortured, lifeless fallen angel. But her brother. . . He very well may change the entire world completely. The twins are extremely close, and he doesn't care about any of that. His biggest question: can he save his sister?

The angel that was caring for them, knowing what would happen, kicked them out. They decided to go to earth, with no knowledge of the human world. They had only their arrows, and the clothes they were wearing. And they were in the middle of London. Not only that, but they know other fallen angels will be looking for them. Earth is a dangerous place for an Archer.
Two humans find them, and decide to take them in. They have no idea what they have gotten themselves into. . . .

But these humans are not mere mortals. They believe that they are, though. They had no idea that their father who abandoned them when they were young was one of the highest ranking angels. No other angels know they exist- and they father wants it to stay that way. Other angels being around them would awaken their abilities. They don't know it, but they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They can manipulate all of the elements. Move entire ocean, burn entire countries, cause devastating hurricanes, all with the blink of an eye.

Angels are already after the two archers, and once they find them with the two half-angels. . . It won't e pretty. They will most likely be killed on sight- the archers know this. The humans intend to leave the city, and go to a small family house in the country. They don't know about who they are or their powers yet, but the twins do. If they can tell them and train them, just maybe they can survive. But even then, they still have to worry about the curse. It is possible that the girl the male twin falls in love with will have the same fate was his sister. There seems to be no way to win. . .
And the curse has already begun to take affect.

Angels

-they do have wings, but they only come out when the angel wants them to. They are very sensitive, as well. A broken wing is about equivalent to all your ribs, and both of your legs being broken.

-they all have certain abilities, based of their lineage. If their mother or father had the gift of invisibility, they would too.

-the higher ranking an angel is, the stronger it is.

-fallen angels keep their abilities, but lose their sense of touch almost completely.

-they are immortal, and the only way to kill them is to chop off their head or if they were cursed by God/an arch angel

-arch angels are the highest ranking angels, and their word is law. To go against one would be a death sentence.

Delilah Whiteraven
Image
Delilah is younger than Ian by two minutes, much to her irritation, and is quite different than him. She is very freespirited and headstrong, often giving her brother a hard time. In all honesty, she loves her brother more than anything and is terrified of what might happen if she falls in love with a human. Like her brother, she is rather naive and pure hearted.
FC: Candice Accola (TAKEN)

The humans

Image
They are siblings. Half siblings, technically, with different mothers, but they grew up together. They fight often, but would never give up on each other. They are orphans and have been through a lot together, and will always stick together. No matter what.
They already feel very attracted to them. . . Like a magnetic pull.

Elliot Thorn

Radioactive Fish in Japan

Fish caught in the waters around the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan could be too radioactive to eat for a decade, as samples show that radioactivity levels in that part of the ocean remain elevated and show little sign of coming down.

Cod, flounder, halibut, pollock, skate and sole could be off limits for years, since large and bottom-dwelling species carry most risk. Sample fish caught in waters near the melted reactors show that there is still a source of caesium leaking into the ocean, either on the seafloor or still being discharged into the sea, perhaps from what is left of the cooling waters.

In the Guardian, Fiona Harvey quotes Woods Hole researcher Ken Buesseler as saying, "These fish could have to be banned for a long time. The most surprising thing for me was that the levels [of radioactivity] in the fish were not going down. There should have been much lower numbers." This is especially tough for an island nation like Japan, which relies on fish for a major part of its diet.

As of April 2012, fish can only be sold in Japan if it contains less than 100 becquerels of caesium 134 and 137 per kilogram of wet weight, down from a previous limit of 500 becquerels.

Harvey quotes Buessler as saying, "This is not lethal--I'm not trying to be alarmist, but the levels [of radioactivity in the fish] are measurable and consistent. It's a small increase in risk."

'Moonrise,' 'Silver Linings' lead Spirit Awards

(AP) ? The oddball romances "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Silver Linings Playbook" picked up five nominations each Tuesday to lead the Spirit Awards honoring independent film.

Both films are competing for the best-picture prize at the Spirit Awards, one of Hollywood's first big announcements on the long road to the Oscars.

Also competing for best picture are the father-daughter tale "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; the black comedy "Bernie"; and the gay drama "Keep the Lights On."

"Silver Linings Playbook," a comic drama centered on a man just released from a mental hospital and a troubled young widow, earned lead-acting nominations for Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. "Moonrise Kingdom," a first-love story between a precocious boy and girl who run away together, received a supporting-actor nomination for Bruce Willis.

The films each earned directing and screenplay slots for "Moonrise Kingdom" filmmaker Wes Anderson, who co-wrote the script with Roman Coppola, and "Silver Linings Playbook" filmmaker David O. Russell. "Moonrise Kingdom" also was nominated for cinematography.

Matthew McConaughey received two nominations, for best actor in "Killer Joe" and supporting actor in "Magic Mike." Past Academy Award winner Helen Hunt has a supporting-actress nomination for "The Sessions." Child star Quvenzhane Wallis, who had never acted before, has a best-actress nomination for "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Among other acting nominees are Jack Black (best actor for "Bernie"); John Hawkes (best actor for "The Sessions"); Rosemarie DeWitt (supporting actress for "Your Sister's Sister"); Michael Pena (supporting actor for "End of Watch"); Sam Rockwell (supporting actor for "Seven Psychopaths"); and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (best actress for "Smashed").

Joining Anderson and Russell in the directing category are Julia Loktev for "The Loneliest Planet," Ira Sachs for "Keep the Lights On" and Benh Zeitlin for "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won the top prize at last January's Sundance Film Festival.

Though the Spirit Awards honor lower-budgeted film outside the Hollywood mainstream, the nominations often overlap heavily with Oscar contenders. Last season's big Oscar winner, "The Artist," also won the top prize at the Spirit Awards, while films such as "The Descendants," ''Beginners" and "My Week with Marilyn" had wins or nominations at both shows.

The overlap may be lighter this season, with big-budget studio films such as "Les Miserables," ''Lincoln" and "Argo" shaping up as early favorites to dominate the Oscars, whose nominations come out Jan. 10.

But "Silver Linings Playbook," ''Moonrise Kingdom," ''Beasts of the Southern Wild," ''The Sessions" and other smaller films have solid prospects in some Oscar categories.

Presented by the cinema group Film Independent, the Spirit Awards will be handed out at an afternoon ceremony along the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., on Feb. 23, the day before the Oscars. The Spirit Awards show will air that night on IFC.

Nominees are chosen by panels of film professionals, which gauge contenders on such criteria as uniqueness of vision; original, provocative subject matter; how economically they were produced; and percentage of financing from independent, non-Hollywood sources. Eligible films typically range from tiny-budgeted movies shot for $500,000 or less to productions that cost as much as $20 million.

Members of Film Independent, including filmmakers and movie fans, are eligible to vote on the winners.

GOP Voter Suppression, Walmart Sucks

No shit?!?! *puts on ?fake shocked face?*. This is crap we already

(No vote for you)

all knew about. But it is always funny when they admit it openly:

?The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly
believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates. It?s
done for one reason and one reason only?we?ve got to cut down on
early voting because early voting is not good for us. They never came
in to see me & tell me we had a fraud issue, it?s all a marketing ploy?
-The former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer

Whoooooopsie! Shit, we all already knew this was a simple fact of

the Republican party. They don?t like minorities, Latino?s, gay?s or

pretty much anyone not a part of Lee Atwaters Southern Strategy

If you don?t know what that is, it?s a racist dog whistle platform to

garner all the southern racist vote without using ethnic slurs. It is

(Fuck you)

where you use words like ?states rights?, or ?food stamps?, or ?tax

cuts? instead of race slurs against the minority group you?re trying

to marginalize. But don?t take my word for it, take Atwaters words

This is the game plan. AGAIN, & I must be very very very clear on

this: not all Republican?s are racist. That is a faulty illogical group

think I do not believe in. However, the racists today are registered

(The asshole)

Republicans. It?s sad, & their party is dying because it was sold to

Lee?s racist Southern Strategy in 1981, & started under Nixon. So

if the party doesn?t change, it will die. It?s already happening now,

the harder they tack right with ?Mitt wasn?t conservative enough?

the quicker they slowly fade into darkness, never to be seen again

They don?t want minorities to vote, period. Because when you do

(Worked for Reagan & Bush)

this election shows you have way more votes. The gap?s widening

Republican?s will never win another national election in 20 years

Walmart Slave Labor Get Burned To Death

A factory making clothing that go to Walmart in Bangladesh. 129

workers died in a fire caused by poor fire safety conditions. WTF?

(RIP poor souls)

What was Walmart?s reaction: ?Meh, must be the slaves labor we

have there but that?s their thing, not ours?. Ohhhhh, so if you did

not do it yourself, it?s still COOL. Now Walmart is saying, ?But we

cut off that factory working on products for us?. Bull fucking shit

During the fire, managers locked the fucking doors, & told them

to get back to work during the fire alarm. Are you fucking serious

(True)

Stay classy Walmart. You can run, but you can?t hide from all the

?fun slave labor? or as the Libertarian?s call it ?freedom? & ?liberty?

That ?unregulated freedom? just killed 129 innocent workers??..

And yet, it seems all so lost to the sociopath?s mind. Because they

don?t give a flying fuck about anyone until it?s their ass on the line

(Up yours)

Then it?s always right because they?re different & needed it. Asses!

Have a day!

Iran: Uranium enrichment to be speeded up

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran will step up its uranium enrichment program by sharply increasing the number of centrifuges used to make nuclear fuel, a senior official said Wednesday, in direct defiance of Western demands.

The statement by Iran's nuclear chief, Fereidoun Abbasi, is likely to escalate tensions. The West suspects Iran's nuclear program could be headed toward weapons production and has imposed punishing sanctions to try to persuade Tehran to stop enrichment.

Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is peaceful and geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Uranium enriched to a low level is used to produce nuclear fuel for reactors, but high level enrichment would make it suitable for use in atomic warheads.

Abbasi said Iran is making nuclear advances in the face of the severe economic measures imposed by the U.N. and the West.

"Despite sanctions, we will most likely see a substantial increase in the number of centrifuge machines this year. We will continue enrichment with intensity," Abbasi was quoted by state TV as saying Wednesday. The Iranian calendar year ends on March 20.

Abbasi did not say if Iran's stepped up work would be at the five percent fuel level or the higher 20 percent quality, which has worried the West because it can be purified to weapons grade more quickly. There have been indications that Iran may push its enrichment even higher than the 20 percent acknowledged to U.N. nuclear watchdogs.

His remarks came days after the U.N. agency said Iran is about to double its output of higher enriched uranium at its fortified Fordo underground facility. That could move Iran closer to weapons capability.

A Nov. 8 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran has installed about 2,800 centrifuges at Fordo and is poised to double the number of operating centrifuges, from the current 700 to nearly 1,400.

Iran says it needs 20 percent enriched uranium to make fuel for a medical research reactor in Tehran that produces isotopes for about 1 million patients annually.

Abbasi also said Iran will soon conduct a test run of its heavy water reactor in Arak in central Iran, despite demands from the U.N. to stop the work. The test will use virtual fuel, not actual radioactive material, he said.

He said construction of the 40-megawatt research reactor is progressing on schedule, but he noted that experts are handling the project with greater care in anticipation of possible sabotage attempts.

"The Arak reactor is progressing without any problem according to the schedule. Only because of security considerations, we are moving with caution, since enemy intends to harm this reactor," he was quoted by state TV as saying. "All the equipment needed to operate this reactor has been purchased."

The West is concerned that the heavy water reactor could produce enough plutonium for a nuclear weapon each year, if the spent fuel is reprocessed. That would be another pathway for bomb-grade material, but Iran is not known to possess a plutonium reprocessing facility

Iran has experienced explosions and malfunctions at its nuclear and industrial sites, partly due to faulty equipment secretly procured on the global market.

Also, Iran says it is the target of a campaign that has included the abduction and assassination of scientists, the sale of faulty equipment and the planting of a destructive computer worm known as Stuxnet, which briefly brought Iran's uranium enrichment activity to a halt in 2010.

Loyal Philly, Marriott Get PR Society Plums

No better illustration of the rampant politics that tramples on member finances and values are the choices of Philadelphia for the 2013 conference of the PR Society and Marriott as the host hotel.

PRS has set a new record by returning to the same conference city in six years and is using Marriott as the host hotel for the third year in a row.

Marriott guards went whole hog in blocking this reporter from everything at the 2011 conference in Orlando and they outdid themselves at the 2012 conference in San Francisco by booting us out of the hotel entirely and telling us not to come back.

This thuggish and actually illegal behavior no doubt sealed Marriott as the hotel of choice for future PRS conferences.

Security at the Marriott S.F. initially told us we had the right to stand behind a certain line in a corridor since PRS had rented the corridors to exhibitors. That seemed o.k. to us.

However, several incoming members said hello and talked to us and word of this got back to PRS staff/leaders. Guards then ordered us to go up two escalators to the hotel lobby and wait there.

Marriott security there told us we could talk to anyone we wanted to and give out papers as long as we bought a coffee at the Starbuck?s in the lobby and were in Starbuck?s territory.

However, more guards soon arrived and countermanded these instructions, saying we were not to talk to anyone nor give anything to anyone including our business cards.

Marriott: Go and Don?t Come Back

After talking to a reporter friend of ours, a security person came up to us, closely and menacingly, and demanded we leave the hotel forthwith, saying we had better obey this. Security said we had broken rules against talking and giving something to someone. We were just about forcibly escorted from the hotel and told not to come back, the guard walking closely and step-by-step to the doorway.

This goon-like behavior was no doubt relayed back to PRS staff/leaders and made them jump for joy.

Ironic is that the VP-PR of Marriott is none other than longtime Washington, D.C. reporter Kathleen Matthews who is married to Chris ?Tell me something I don?t know? Matthews of MSNBC. Both have been informed several times of Marriott?s lusty enforcement of PRS?s anti-public, un-American and illegal blockage of press coverage. They remain silent on this subject.

Ellen Gonda, VP-PR of Hilton, whose Washington Hilton hotel was the scene of the 2010 conference, had called up PRS staffers to protest discrimination against O?Dwyer reporters but said her pleas ?fell on deaf ears.?

PRS?s blocking of Assembly coverage by any reporters means the Society has forfeited the right to use of the word ?public? in its name since reporters are also part of the public.

About the only word accurate in the group?s name is ?Society? since it is not ?public,? its ?relations? with the outside world are spotty and/or hostile, and its anti-democratic, anti-press, information-withholding behavior proves it is the antithesis of what America stands for.

Philly Conference Is Indefensible

Holding a conference in the same city only six years later is an obvious award to a chapter whose leaders have been super-loyal to national and particularly the APR program of its all-APR leaders.

The five-person Philadelphia and four-person Puget Sound Assembly delegations led the fight in 2004 against allowing non-APRs into the Assembly. The motion only passed by five votes.

Philadelphia proposed that half of each Assembly delegation be APR while Puget Sound would only allow one non-APR delegate every three years. Critics noted that more than 30 chapters only have one delegate and was this delegate supposed to be chopped in half?

A member of the Philadelphia delegation was Carole Gorney, retired professor emeritus of Lehigh University and a Fellow of PRS. All five delegates voted against letting non-APRs into the Assembly according to the roll call vote, the only one ever taken using the electronic devices that were introduced with the 1999 Assembly.

2012 Assembly Was Huge Waste

The 2012 Assembly, which considered no bylaw changes and which was busted into numerous chat groups for three hours (about which there has been no report), was a gigantic waste of the money and time of the nearly 270 delegates. ?Most useless Assembly ever,? said a group of senior members in a memo to us.

Delegates were forced to spend two extra nights in a hotel unless they got to the meeting early that Saturday morning via a ?red-eye? flight.

The tragedy is that the same thing will be repeated Oct. 25, 2013, the Friday before the start of the conference, instead of putting the meeting within the conference such as Monday afternoon.

The 2012 Assembly proved to any doubters that leaders/staff would just as soon as do away with the meeting. The Int?l PR Assn. has done just that by eliminating its 60-person governing Council despite protests and resignations of leaders. http://tinyurl.com/cmzezsm

An audit of the reported attendees at the 2012 PRS conference is something that needs to be done.

The attendance list shows that more than 20 ex-presidents and chairs were present but former such leaders say no more than eight or nine ever attend the special dinner for them on Monday night. Also in the attendance list are the names of 26 staffers and we wonder how many of them actually were at the conference. How many other fake names are on that list?

Wikipedia Resists Corrections

On another front, we continue to work with Wikipedia editors in an effort to get a more accurate history of PRS. The editors have made at least a half dozen corrections we have sent them but still insist there is writing on the APR exam although a co-chair of the UAB has told them there is no writing.

The WP entry says that the Assembly governs the Society when the Assembly has been told numerous times by the board that policy-setting is in the hands of the board.

Major events in the Society?s history are left out such as the 1989 split with its 501/c/3 educational arm the PRS Foundation. That body left to form the Institute for PR, ridding itself of the demand that all board members be APR. Such a rule crimped fund-raising because few PR executives are APR.

There is no mention of PRS?s decision in 1995 to close the exhibit hall for four years after more than 40 exhibitors organized the PR Service Council to lobby for better treatment at conferences.

Missing is the censure of Washington, D.C. counselor Summer Harrison in 1988 after she called for PRS to criticize four PR leaders for giving CIA head Bill Casey advice on how to raise funds for the Contras of Nicaragua. Two former PRS officers were among the four, Kal Druck and Kenneth Clark. Harold Burson refused to go to the meeting when he heard it was about the Contras.

Also missing is the tossing of hundreds of Silver Anvil entries in the 1980s because minor rules were broken such as a binder being more than three inches deep. Anyone who purchased a ?Three-Inch Binder? got disqualified because PRS, unlike the rest of the world, measured the binder from the outside rather than the inside. The outside measurement is 3.25 inches.

Tens of thousands of dollars of entry fees were kept and the contestants were not even told why they were disqualified. The O?Dwyer NL exposed this abusive practice by the staff. Member Lou Capozzi spearheaded a move to stop minor flaws from getting an entry tossed.

This site may offer a reward of from $300 to $500 for any PR professor, PR person or grad student who compiles the best list of mistakes of omission and commission in the WP PRS entry. The reward will be offered if we get enough interest in this.

Kale and brown rice salad with cranberries and pecans

Vegan, gluten free, and perfect for pot lucks, this salad has it all. Prepare your brown rice the day before, then toss it with freshly washed kale, cranberries, pecans, and a homemade?vinaigrette.

By Sarah Murphy-Kangas,?In Praise of Leftovers / November 26, 2012

This bright and beautiful salad is best served at room temperature. Bring it along to your next potluck, or serve it at home as a side dish with pork chops or chicken.

In Praise of Leftovers

I feel two ways about potlucks. On one hand, they're the only sensible way for a big group to gather and eat together. In all my magazine-reading (have I mentioned how much I love magazines? The paper kind?), I often come across "Easy do-ahead party menus!" that look atrocious. More work than I have ever put into having anyone over in my life. Maybe each step is technically easy, but you'd still have to be unemployed (or have a kitchen staff), hyper organized, and love cooking to pull it off. So potlucks solve this problem.

However, sometimes too many potlucks stack up in one week, and I find they are just as much work (or more) than what I would have made for my family that night. And I have occasionally cursed potlucks, though please don't tell anyone. Puget Sounders are supposed to love them. Always.

I adore people that bring a hot, main dish to potlucks. People with crockpots (I gave mine away as it was suffering from disuse), people with those handy Rubbermaid sets with thermal jackets. If you're one of those, thank you! Keep doing your thing!

As for me and my house, we will supply the salad. It's usually something like this one ? brown rice and kale salad with cranberries and pecans. Here's my reasoning:

1. It's vegan and gluten free. And I label it as such.?

2. It's filling. Though I'm not a main dish super hero (God bless?you!) it's conceivable that someone could eat a load of this and feel fairly satisfied.

3. It's delicious. Have I ever let you down? (Don't chime in if I have. I know readers have slaved over some recipes and been ruinously disappointed. I'm sorry!)

4. It is best served room temperature. (Potluck royalty!)

5. It can sit in its vinaigrette forever and just get better. You don't have to worry about it getting soggy.

6. Crazily, I usually have everything I need for a version of this salad -- grains, greens, homemade vinagrette. If you wash and dry kale and put it in a ziploc bag in the fridge, it lasts a really long time. (Though it gets gobbled up around here. Along with a latte and Triscuits, it's the food I eat almost every day.)

7. It looks bright and beautiful with the macerated cranberries and the green kale. There's never any left.

The very first recipe I posted was something similar ? Barley and kale salad with dried cherries and blue cheese. I had taken it to my Mom's birthday party and been accosted with requests for the recipe.

I prided myself on always delivering recipes (handwritten and cobbled together from memory) to people who asked for them, but had the idea of putting it online to save my fingers from so much work. I made up the name on-the-spot, and I've always been glad I didn't think it about it much. Otherwise it wouldn't have happened. (I have a couple dear friends who are contemplating ? and contemplating some more! ?the idea starting a blog. Just get out there. We'll all be better for it.)

Kale and brown rice salad with cranberries and pecans

You could use white rice, barley, quinoa ... so many other grains here. The important thing is that it's had a chance to cool down a little bit so the grains can separate. If you can't cook it ahead of time and chill it, just spread it out in a very shallow layer, drizzle a little bit of olive oil over it, and stir it occasionally to release the steam.

4 cups cooked grain (I made brown rice in my rice cooker the day before)

1 large bunch curly green kale, de-stemmed, washed, dried, and coarsely chopped

1/2 cup toasted pecans, coarsely chopped

2 tablespoons honey

salt and pepper

2 garlic gloves

4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup olive oil?

1/2 red onion, thinly sliced?

1/2 cup dried cranberries

For dressing

Combine honey, salt and pepper, garlic, vinegar, and olive oil with an immersion blender. (Or with a whisk if you use a garlic press.) Add more of anything to taste. Drop the sliced onions and dried cranberries into the dressing to marinate.

To assemble salad

In a large bowl, combine rice, kale, and dressing. I use my hands. Make sure everything is covered with the vinaigrette. That's what makes this salad. Scatter the toasted pecans over the top and maybe a little more coarse salt and pepper.?

Panel to recommend child-abuse law changes in Pa.

(AP) ? A commission set up by the Pennsylvania Legislature after Jerry Sandusky's molestation arrest last year will issue a report that could recommend changes to state law.

The Pennsylvania Task Force on Child Protection Tuesday may also suggest new procedures to protect children.

The 11-person group was set up by the state House and Senate, with membership drawn from the legal profession, educators and health care workers.

The chairman, Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler, had hoped to have the report issued before the current legislative session ends so that lawmakers could take action, but the General Assembly is not expected to return until January.

Possible areas of focus include how child abuse is reported, the need to pass new laws or amend existing laws, and potential improvements in training.

Sandusky, 68, a former Penn State assistant football coach, is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison sentence after being convicted this summer of 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

Nonprofit offering to assess broadband

The Internet has become an integral part of daily life, but there still are many small businesses that haven?t latched onto the technology.

That?s where Connect North Georgia is stepping in. The economic development nonprofit organization is making broadband adoption assessments for local small businesses.

The goal is to help small businesses increase revenue, lower costs and gain exposure, said Bruce Abraham, Connect North Georgia president and chief executive officer.

?Most businesses are just scratching the surface of the potential broadband provides their business," Abraham said. ?In our experience up here in north Georgia, as we?ve provided Internet connections to small businesses, we realize that they hadn?t had this capacity before and a lot of folks didn?t know what to do with it.?

Abraham said there are 17 basic applications the program is focusing on that can help improve business.

Much like a recent program providing high-speed broadband to the north Georgia region, Abraham said this program is also funded through a federal grant.

?The research has shown for every 10 percent increase in Internet usage by a small business, they?ll see about a 24 percent increase in revenue and a 7 percent decrease in costs,? Abraham said.

About 1,800 small businesses in the region were sent information regarding the free online assessment that looks at how they use the Internet.

Participating businesses will receive a Digital Economy Index Scorecard report suggesting solutions to grow their business.

Abraham said Connect North Georgia will respond by showing how they can maximize use of the Internet, as well as showing how peers in that particular industry are using it.

Connect North Georgia has joined with Strategic Networks Group, an international group of broadband economists, to provide these assessments.

"By taking the current state of broadband use and comparing it to like-sized companies in similar industries, we?re able to educate businesses on best practices for broadband utilization," said Michael Curri, president of Strategic Network Group.

The organization is working on a Web site where businesses can follow up with their assessment and look at the applications and get advice.

?We?re going to take this baseline in the region of where Internet usage is today and then we?re going to analyze these same companies a year from now to see just what kind of affect these applications have had,? Abraham said. "Small businesses are the heartbeat of north Georgia ? we?re trying to make that heartbeat stronger and pump more prosperity into north Georgia."

Lack of nutrients and metabolic syndrome linked to different subtypes of depression

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A low intake of folate and vitamin B12 increases the risk of melancholic depressive symptoms, according to a study among nearly 3,000 middle-aged and elderly Finnish subjects. On the other hand, non-melancholic depressive symptoms are associated with an increased risk for the metabolic syndrome. Based on these new observations, melancholic and non-melancholic depression may be separate depressive subtypes with different etiologies in terms of proinflammation and diet. The study was the first to look at these depressive sub-types separately.

"The findings have practical implications in the care of patients with depressive symptoms. For example, it may be wise to avoid medication causing weight gain among patients with non-melancholic depression, whereas melancholic depressive symptoms may call for a closer look at the quality of the patient's diet," says Mr Jussi Sepp?l?, MD, Chief of the Department of Psychiatry of the Hospital District of Southern Savo.

Melancholic depression involves typical depressive symptoms, such as a depressed mood. Non-melancholic depression is characterized by other types of symptoms, such as low self-esteem and feelings of worry and anxiety.

Among subjects with the highest folate intake, the risk for melancholic depressive symptoms was almost 50 per cent lower than among those with the lowest intake. In addition, among those with the highest vitamin B12 levels, the risk for melancholic depressive symptoms was almost three times lower than among those with the lowest levels. Both findings are new. A similar association with non-melancholic depressive symptoms was not observed.

Another novel observation is that the risk for the metabolic syndrome was twofold among those with non-melancholic depressive symptoms, as compared to those with melancholic symptoms or those with no depressive symptoms.

Mr Sepp?l?'s doctoral thesis "Depressive symptoms, metabolic syndrome and diet" was published at the University of Eastern Finland. The study was conducted as part of the Finnish Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Programme. The findings were originally published in Journal of Affective Disorders.
