United Spinal's 8th Annual Kids Sports Spectacular: Recreation ...

United Spinal presents the 8th annual Kids Sports Spectacular (KSS) for children and young adults with disabilities (ages of 4 ? 21) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA, to be held on Saturday, August 4th from 10am to 3pm.

The Kids Sports Spectacular is a free, one-day, indoor event that features instruction and educational clinics on Basketball, Tennis, Sled Hockey, Hand Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Squash and Softball.

Kids will also have the opportunity to try martial arts therapy, which builds confidence and teaches inner strength.

Free lunch and refreshments for all participants will be provided and free copies of New Mobility Magazine will be offered to all attendees.

Families from last year?s KSS said the following:

??I really want to say thank you! Thanks to all the sponsors and the people who made this happen. Thanks to the volunteers who help my little brother enjoy such a wonderful experience. This has been the greatest day of my life!?

??We all had fun. Thank you for having us here. This is a dream come true for Lincoln. It?s really touched my heart to see my son enjoying himself.?

??This has been an absolute delight. My brother has the biggest smile on his face. I?ve never seen him so happy. ?

??Last year was the first time we came to the Kids Sports Spectacular. My son didn?t want to come last year. Thanks to these activities and KSS, he?s now a part of a wheelchair basketball team in Delaware! He couldn?t wait for today?s activity. He?s so happy. Next year, he wants to be a volunteer. As a parent, I?m happy kids have the opportunity to learn to practice and participate in sports.?

The Kids Sports Spectacular is hosted by United Spinal Association, Aramark and Comcast-Spectacor, the Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment firm that is providing the use of the Wells Fargo Center for the event. Curiosity's Mars exploration: Is it worth the money?

The search for life on Mars has captivated the imaginations of many, but it is costly. Some say it's time to cut spending on NASA's Mars missions, while others say the research is important in the quest for understanding the 'meaning of life.' ?

Saturn has its famous rings and Jupiter is the granddaddy of the solar system, but no planet has entranced earthlings quite like?Mars.

Humans have launched 40 spacecraft to the Red Planet, lured by the prospect that life might once have existed in what is now dry rocks and sand. The latest machine to make the journey is NASA?s?Mars?Science Laboratory, a hulking, souped-up lab-on-wheels that will plunge toward the Martian surface next week.

But even as excitement builds, some wonder: Is?Mars?exploration a good investment?

It certainly doesn?t come cheap. It?s hard to calculate a total price tag, but over the 48 years that NASA has been launching missions to?Mars, Americans have spent a significant sum. The Viking missions alone cost nearly $1 billion ? in 1970s dollars. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity cost a total of about $1 billion to build and operate as well.

Curiosity, as the?Mars?Science Laboratory rover is known, is over budget at $2.5 billion.

Some in the federal government have suggested it?s time to roll back the spending. President Barack Obama?s fiscal plan for 2013 would cut NASA?s funds for?Mars?exploration from $587 million to $360 million.

Proponents insist?Mars?science is vital for the U.S. More visits to our next-door neighbor could answer lingering questions about Earth?s history, reinforce U.S. prestige and get more children interested in science.

It also could bring humanity closer to answering the ultimate question: Are we alone in the universe?

?It?s the search for the meaning of life,? said Alden Munson, a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a science and technology think tank based in Arlington, Va.

America?s love affair with?Mars?can be traced to astronomer Percival Lowell, who turned his telescope to the Red Planet in the 1890s and thought he saw an intricate system of canals that must have been built by intelligent beings. He never found them, of course, but Martians became a science fiction mainstay.

Earthlings got their first up-close view of?Mars? rocky surface in 1965, when Mariner 4 flew by and photographed a surface that appeared as dead as the moon?s ? lacking water or active geology, two prerequisites for life.

But later missions, from the Mariner 9 orbiter to Spirit and Opportunity, helped establish?Mars?as a useful comparative laboratory for studying climate and geophysics on Earth. They demonstrated that the planet was once warmer and wetter than it is now. Long ago, it may have been a hospitable cradle for life.

When planetary scientists assembled recently at the behest of the National Academies to set research priorities for the next decade, the search for conditions that would allow life to emerge on?Mars?topped the list.

Reds continue to roll, win 10th straight

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:36 p.m. ET July 29, 2012

DENVER (AP) - Mat Latos felt the weight of the Cincinnati Reds' winning streak when he took the mound.

After getting roughed up by the first two batters he faced on Sunday, the big right-hander settled down and kept Cincinnati rolling.

Latos pitched eight strong innings, and Drew Stubbs homered to lift Cincinnati over the Colorado Rockies 7-2 and give the Reds their 10th straight win - their longest streak in 14 years.

The Reds also won 10 straight in 1998, and now they are two wins away from tying the franchise mark that has been done twice - most recently in 1957.

Cincinnati opened a three-game lead over Pittsburgh in NL Central, its biggest edge since mid-June.

"They're not going to go away, that's fairly obviously at this point," outfielder Jay Bruce said of the Pirates. "We have some series left with them, but anytime you can gain a game it's great."

Bruce also homered and Stubbs drove in three runs. Ryan Hanigan and Zack Cozart had two hits each for the Reds, who have won 17 of 19.

The Reds have swept four of five series since the All-Star break and they are a season-best 21 games above .500 (61-40). They have won nine straight road games, including all six on this just-completed trip.

"I'm always talking a perfect road trip and we finally had one," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Latos (9-3) didn't want to be the one to stop the Reds' momentum, and he rose to the challenge. He allowed four hits and struck out eight.

"A lot of pressure coming into the game knowing we won nine in a row, but I just attacked them," Latos said. "Today it was in the back of my mind, but it's baseball. Just play."

Things didn't start well. Latos walked Dexter Fowler on five pitches, and Josh Rutledge homered on the first pitch he saw from Latos to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead.

"It was a fastball away. It looked like I beat him but he got it up in the air and into a bad part of the ballpark where it flies out," Latos said.

It was the only bright spot for Colorado, which has lost three straight and nine of 11.

"Josh jumped on that first pitch fastball in the bottom of the first inning after Dexter drew a walk, and then that was it," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said.

The Reds took a 3-2 lead into the fifth, then broke it open against Jonathan Sanchez (0-2). Cozart led off with a single, and Stubbs hit his 12th home run.

One out later, Bruce hit his 20th homer into the second deck in right to make it 6-2 and chase Sanchez.

Sanchez, acquired from Kansas City for Jeremy Guthrie on July 20, didn't fare much better than the pitcher he replaced. In his home debut, Sanchez allowed six runs and eight hits, struck out three and walked two. He has failed to pitch at least five innings in either of his starts for Colorado.

"I got hit a lot," he said. "I was throwing strikes and they were swinging the bats."

Miguel Cairo added an RBI single in the eighth off Mike Ekstrom to make it 7-2.

Cincinnati took the lead with carbon-copy plays in consecutive innings. In the second, Chris Heisey led off with a triple and scored on Cairo's sacrifice fly. Cozart followed with a leadoff triple in the third and came home on Stubbs' sacrifice fly to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.

"The bats have picked up the past couple of days," Bruce said. "We've been doing what we need to do. Whether it's the long ball, base hits, sac flies, we've been playing really good baseball."

The Reds struck first when Brandon Phillips' single scored Stubbs from second base in the first. The Rockies answered in the bottom half when Rutledge homered.

"Latos threw the ball great," Baker said. "Other than that first-inning, two-run homer he was lights out. We got some timely hits out of guys."

Phillips left the game in the fifth inning with cramping in his left calf but said he should be fine.

"I'm all right. The knot is still there but I'll be OK," he said. "People were saying it was the altitude, the dry heat, I didn't drink enough water or something. I'm ready to play (Monday). I think I'm going to play."

NOTES: Heisey, who also doubled, has had multiple extra-base hits in four games this season. ... The Reds went 5-1 against Colorado this season. ... The Reds open a six-game homestand with Mike Leake (4-6) facing San Diego on Monday. ... Colorado's Jeff Francis (3-2) will pitch the first game of a three-game series against St. Louis on Tuesday.

Go Team! ? EduKids Early Childhood Education Centers

Posted by: edukidsinc on: July 30, 2012

Kate Dust, EduKids Education Director

It?s Olympic week throughout the world!? There will be high focus on sporting events, sportsmanship and athletic abilities.? There will be celebrations of individual accomplishments and team success.? There will be ?winners? on a worldwide stage and ?losers? in an Olympic Stadium.? The U.S. athletes and teams will be celebrated!? They will be positioned on television and in advertisements as the models of health & athletic skills.?? All of this is exciting!

What lessons are young children learning about individual and team sports? I think we can?learn so much from this Olympic week as we look at our children, as a member of a team or as an individual athlete.? What are the benefits of team sports??

Considerations:

  1. Before your child joins a team or begins lessons in any formal sport: baseball, soccer? or class: dance, gymnastics, swimming? make sure that this is your child?s interest.
  2. Check schedules of practice, games, recitals and cost.? What will you have to do as the child?s parent?? This is your commitment ? and it is often substantial to a family?s time and budget.

Benefits of team sports:

  • Health.? Athletes are healthy.? A team will practice together under the watchful eye of the coach.? Nutrition will be highlighted, strength will be celebrated and healthy habits will be taught for both individual stamina and team benefit.? A healthy body is critical to development and growth.? Exercise is continual and builds muscles, strength and endurance; life long skills.

  • Healthy Competition.? Team sports look different throughout your child?s ages and stages.? Initially, a team will not focus on or tolerate competition until the skills needed for the sport are established and practiced.? Young children will have coaches who are on the field with them giving individual verbal direction and supporting all attempts at the game.? Later, competition will be introduced as part of the sporting event ? a team wins together and a team loses together. Individuals do not win a game.? An individual does not lose a game.?? As children get older and are ready to understand healthy competition, they will work very hard on their skills and recognize the skills and contributions of others on their team as well as their own important role.

  • Friendship building.? Being on a team offers many opportunities to make friends and be a friend.? Often young children who are together on a team are lifelong friends.? Trophies and photos of little athletes with their team or a new swimmer diving into the pool are cherished forever.

?The Olympics bring families and communities together.? Children and families are watching.? I watch in awe?the competition?the athletes caught up in the excitement!?? GO TEAM USA!! First Lady Michelle Obama

French get revenge for 2008 relay loss to US

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte grabbed at the edge of the pool, head down, staring at the water. Michael Phelps glared at the scoreboard, trying to digest the first silver medal of his Olympic career.

Right beside them, the French celebrated.

It was just like 2008 but with the roles reversed.

This time, it was France chasing down the United States ? and Lochte, no less ? to win another riveting relay at the Olympics.

"We got our revenge," French swimmer Clement Lefert said.

With Phelps looking much stronger than he did the night before, the Americans built a commanding lead over the first three legs of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay Sunday and never really had to worry about the defending world champions from Australia.

When Lochte dove into the water on the anchor leg, he was a half-body length ahead of the field and looking to add another gold to his dominating victory Saturday in the 400 individual medley.

Not so fast.

Or, should we say, not fast enough.

Yannick Agnel, playing the chaser role that Jason Lezak did for the Americans four years ago in this same event, sliced through the water and was right on Lochte's shoulder as they made the flip at the far end of the pool. With about 25 meters to go, they were stroke for stroke. But Lochte, who had already competed in 1,200 meters of racing over the first two days, simply didn't have enough left to hold off the towering, 20-year-old Frenchman, one of the sport's real rising stars.

"I gave everything in the last 50 until he cracked," Agnel said. "In the last 10 meters, I saw that he was really cracking."

Agnel touched in 3 minutes, 9.93 seconds, having gone exactly 1 second faster than Lochte over the last two laps. Lochte and the Americans dropped to silver in 3:10.38, while Australia ? the favorite ? didn't even get a medal. Russia took the bronze in 3:11.41, edging the team from Down Under by 0.22.

Phelps settled for his 17th career medal and completed his collection of Olympic colors, adding a silver to his 14 golds and two bronzes. He also moved a step closer to becoming the most decorated Olympian ever, just one away from tying the mark for most career medals held by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, and has five events to go.

"At least I'm in a medal today," Phelps said ruefully, referring to a fourth-place finish in his first race of the London Games.

But silver was a bitter disappointment for the Americans, who know how the French felt four years ago.

France had the lead in Beijing and its best sprinter, Alain Bernard, going out on the final leg. But Lezak swam the fastest relay leg in history, drafting Bernard along the lane rope and beating him by a scant 0.08 seconds to keep Phelps on track for his record eight gold medals.

That was one of the greatest races in Olympic history.

This one wasn't too shabby, either.

"I was just really excited and I think I overswam the first 50 and it hurt me for the last 50," Lochte said. "But we were able to get a medal, so I guess that's good."

Lochte's reaction was much different than the one he had the night before, when he finished more than 3 seconds ahead of the other medalists and more than 4 seconds ahead of Phelps in the 400 IM.

Even though Phelps got a medal this time, he didn't look much happier. He lingered at the edge of the pool right above Lochte, before going over to congratulate the French.

Phelps put up the fastest time among the American swimmers, covering the second 100 in 47.15 and showing he still intends to be a force at these games after his disappointing start. Nathan Adrian swam the leadoff leg in 47.89, going out faster than Australian star James "The Missile" Magnussen to give the U.S. an early lead. Cullen Jones was solid, too, in the third spot (47.60).

Lochte was handed a lead of more than a half-second, but he couldn't hold it. Agnel covered the final leg in 46.74, while Lochte labored home in 47.74.

Agnel's anchor wasn't quite as spectacular as Lezak's 46.06 at Beijing, but the French had no complaints.

"It's magical, simply magical," Agnel said. "We didn't have too much pressure. We did what we know how to do. Now, Olympic champions. It's brilliant."

They climbed to top step of the podium to receive their medals, looking down at the Americans.

"It's tough," Phelps said. "We'd like to be on top, but Yannick has been swimming well all year and those guys put together a great relay. We tried to get ourselves into as much open water as we could. We had four great guys to get up there and swam as fast as we could. We were the ones that the coaches thought were going to have the best shot. We went out there and raced. That's all you can ask."

The U.S. coaches will surely come under scrutiny for going with Lochte, who had little experience in the 100 free and had never competed on this relay at the Olympics. But, coming off his dominant showing the first night, it's hard to argue about going with a swimmer who appeared to have the hottest hand of all.

"The 100 free, I don't really swim it. I haven't swum it in a long time," Lochte said. "You would think doing distance events, I wouldn't get tired. But sprinting takes a lot out of you."

In an interesting twist, Bernard will get a gold medal even though he didn't swim the final. Amaury Leveaux and Fabien Gilot took the first two legs, but Bernard will be rewarded, too, for taking part in the morning prelims. Maybe that will soothe some bitter feelings from four years ago.

Two more world records fell earlier in the evening.

American Dana Vollmer took down the mark in the 100 butterfly, then Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa broke another in the 100 breaststroke ? denying Japan's Kosuke Kitajima an Olympic threepeat.

Not even through the second night of the London Games, three world records had already been set.

So much for those dire predictions of marks standing for decades after high-tech bodysuits were banned.

This was quite a night for France, and not just because of the relay. Camille Muffat won a riveting 400 freestyle duel with American Allison Schmitt, the two virtually stroke for stroke the entire way. Muffat held on to win by about half a stroke with an Olympic-record time, while Schmitt settled for silver ? a sign of things to come.

Britain's Rebecca Adlington brought out the biggest cheer when she touched third, the home country's first swimming medal of the games.

Vollmer was third at the turn but powered to the wall for a time of 55.98, beating the record of 56.06 set by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom at the 2009 world championships. Not bad for someone who didn't even qualify for the last Olympics, her career sidetracked by injuries and illness.

"I kept telling myself that my strength is my second 50," Vollmer said. "I kept really calm."

She dropped back her head when saw the time, then broke into a huge smile, slapped the water and pumped her fists.

"I'm on top of the world right now," said Vollmer, who qualified for Athens as a 16-year-old but was a disappointment in 2008. "I still know I can go faster."

Kitajima was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same race at three straight Olympics. But, like Phelps the night before in the 400 IM, the Japanese star didn't come close.

Van der Burgh made sure of that, dominating the race almost as soon as his head popped out of the water for the first time. He was comfortably ahead at the turn and blew away the field on the return lap to touch in 58.46, knocking off another of the marks set at the 2009 world championships.

Brenton Rickard's time of 58.58 was among the astonishing 43 world records established at that meet in Rome, when rubberized suits took the sport to times that bordered on absurd. The suits have since been banned, with some predicting that it might take decades to go faster in textile suits.

Only two records fell at last year's worlds in Shanghai, but the Olympic meet has already beaten that number with three over the first two days.

Australia's Christian Sprenger took the silver in 58.93, and American Brendan Hansen claimed bronze in 59.49, providing a bit of salve for past Olympic disappointments. Hansen was so disgusted with his performance in Beijing that he retired from the sport, saying he was totally burned out. After giving triathlons a try, he returned to the pool and got back up to speed.

"That's as fast as I can go right now, and I'm really pleased with the outcome," Hansen said.

Kitajima didn't find the speed he needed, struggling home in fifth at 59.79. The night before, Phelps failed in his bid to win a third straight 400 IM title, fading to fourth while Lochte took gold with a dominating performance.

Van der Burgh propped himself on the lane rope, his chest heaving up and down, his hands cupped behind his head, a big smile on his face. He looked up toward the roof and pointed, a nod to his good friend, Alex Dale Oen, the world champion in this event who died suddenly in April from cardiac arrest.

"I just have to pay tribute to Alex Oen," van der Burgh said. "I know that he's been with me this year and helped me to finish the race in such a strong manner. If there is such a thing as a perfect race for me, I definitely think that I submitted it tonight. I don't even care about the world record. Once you become an Olympic champion, you join the club."

Lu Ying gave China another medal, taking silver behind Vollmer in 56.87. Australia's Alicia Coutts grabbed the bronze in 56.94. It was a tough night for Sjostrom, who not only lost her world record but didn't even get a medal, touching fourth in 57.17.

Muffat and Schmitt raced side by side the whole way in the 400 free, with Muffat clinging tenaciously to the lead while the American tried desperately to reel her in. She couldn't pull it off, as Muffat touched in 4 minutes, 1.45 seconds to win by a scant 0.32. Adlington was looking to defend her Olympic title in the event, but the big crowd seemed pleased that she rallied from a sluggish start to at least make the podium.

"I saw them guys. They were off. I just couldn't keep with them," Adlington said. "To be honest, I am so happy I managed to sneak that medal. ... Another Olympic medal is just unbelievable, and there is not an ounce of disappointment in me."

The same couldn't be said for the American men's relay team.

2 SKoreans arrested for mobile customer data theft

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korean police said they arrested two men who allegedly stole the personal details of about 8 million mobile phone subscribers and sold the data to marketing companies in one of the country's biggest hacking schemes.

Police said in a statement Sunday that the two men developed the hacking program that was used to steal the names, residential registration numbers and phone numbers of customers of KT, which is South Korea's largest fixed-line telephone company and No. 2 mobile operator. The program was uploaded to the company's computer systems and harvested personal data for months.

Police said the two made about $877,000 from the hacking scheme. They sold the program as well as mobile subscriber data to telemarketing companies which used the details to contact customers to solicit them to switch to other mobile operators.

Authorities said a former KT employee and six others were also charged for their roles in the scheme.

The data theft at KT took place over the span of five months from February and affected about half of KT's 16 million mobile customers.

KT apologized and said it will beef up its security system.

The incident is the latest in a series of large-scale hacking attacks that have affected millions in one of the world's most wired countries. Last year, hackers stole personal data of 13 million gamers at Nexon and private details of 35 million members at web portal Nate and Cyworld were leaked.

Troops, students, teachers to fill Olympic seats

LONDON (AP) -- Troops, teachers and students are getting free tickets to fill prime seats that were empty at some Olympic venues on the first full day of competition.

Organizing chief Sebastian Coe answered widespread criticism Sunday by predicting that seats left unused, largely by Olympic and sports officials, will not be an issue as the games proceed.

"It is obvious, some of those seats are not being used in the early rounds," he said at a briefing.

He declined to blame Olympic sponsors, whom he had earlier promised to "name and shame" if they did not use their allocations. Sponsors, including Coca-Cola and Visa, defended their use of allotted tickets - 8 percent of the 8.8 million available tickets.

The issue is sensitive for Olympic organizers and British sports fans after hundreds of thousands of people failed to get tickets in an initial public ballot.

"There is not a single person who thinks it is shambolic," Coe insisted, adding no one would object to free tickets for military personnel who "stepped up to the mark" this month to help solve a security staffing crisis at venues.

Coe's organizing team has long promised to fill venues and avoid a similar problem from the Beijing Olympics.

He said he was "jammed in shoulder to shoulder" with Olympic officials to see swimming finals - including the first Ryan Lochte-Michael Phelps duel - on Saturday evening. He also pointed to record crowds lining the men's road race route, and for rowing events at Eton Dorney.

"Those venues are stuffed to the gunnels. The public are in there," Coe said.

He said he was "jammed in shoulder to shoulder" with Olympic officials at swimming finals Saturday evening. He also pointed to record crowds lining the men's road race route, and for rowing events at Eton Dorney.

"Those venues are stuffed to the gunnels. The public are in there," Coe said.

Yet broadcast images of signature Olympic events, such as gymnastics and swimming, revealed rows of empty seats for qualifying rounds Saturday. Tennis at Wimbledon's Centre Court was sparsely attended just weeks after the Grand Slam event sold out.

Army personnel attended gymnastics sessions Sunday morning at North Greenwich Arena during down time from security duties.

"There are a whole bunch of the military actually sitting in those seats at the moment. We can and we have moved them in there," Coe said.

Students and teachers from east London neighborhoods also would get late calls for free tickets, having already been accredited in a planned reallocation program. Some ticket holders will get upgrades inside venues, Coe said.

Some blame for the opening day embarrassment was falling on "accredited people," including the Olympic family, athletes, and some sponsors and media, organizers said.

Coe said it was typical at Olympics for sports and national team officials to be "dragged to any number of venues," and be too busy to attend events in the opening days. "I don't think you will be seeing this as an issue long term during the games."

He went on to defend sponsors, whose legal rights to protect their brand at the Olympics often fuel criticism.

"I am not sure naming and shaming is what we are into at the moment. Sponsors are turning up," Coe said.

Still, British Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt had said Saturday that no-shows were suspected to be corporate guests.

"We think it was accredited seats that belonged to sponsors," Hunt said. "But if they're not going to turn up, we want those tickets to be available for members of the public, because that creates the best atmosphere."

Coca-Cola and Visa said they gave most of their allocated seats to prize winners in promotional offers. Coca-Cola said its competitions allowed people "to choose the event they really wanted to attend."

"We have also invited some long-standing partners, employees, and customers to attend the games. We believe that usage levels of our tickets have been extremely high so far," the company said.

Visa said it made "great efforts to ensure that our ticket allocations are fully used."

Organizers will use further tactics to boost attendance and offer more opportunities to see Olympic events.

Releasing tickets for walk-up sales allowed for about 1,000 seats to be sold for gymnastics Saturday, and the Wimbledon policy of "recycling" tickets has been adopted.

Coe said almost 300 people saw handball matches Saturday by buying cheap tickets - 5 British pounds ($7.87) for adults, 1 pound ($1.57) for children - which were handed in for resale by the original ticket holders on leaving the venue.

Olympic-Class Athletes Abound in Animal Kingdom

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- When it comes to speed, strength and endurance, even Olympic athletes can't compete with the animals who are champions in their fields, a British researcher says.

For example, cheetahs and pronghorn antelopes are among the animals that are faster than Usain Bolt, who is currently the fastest person in the world, according to Craig Sharp of the Center for Sports Medicine and Human Performance at Brunel University in London.

The fastest a human can run is 23.4 miles per hour (mph). A cheetah is nearly twice as fast, at 64 mph, while a pronghorn antelope can run at 55 mph.

An ostrich is the world's fastest running bird at 40 mph, or 59 feet per second. The fastest greyhound has been clocked at 43 mph and the fastest thoroughbred racehorse at 55 mph.

When it comes to strength, an African elephant can lift 661 pounds with its trunk and carry 1,807 pounds. A gorilla can lift 1,984 pounds and a grizzly bear can lift 1,000 pounds.

Humans have various features that make them well-suited for long-distance running, such as long legs, short toes, arched feet and ample fuel storage capacity, Sharp said. But the top marathoners would be hard-pressed to beat camels, which can maintain speeds of 10 mph for more than 18 hours, or the Siberian huskies that set a record in 2011, racing for eight days, 19 hours and 47 minutes, covering 114 miles a day.

In long jumping, a red kangaroo has covered 42 feet, compared with the human record of 29 feet. In high jump, the red kangaroo can leap 10 feet, compared with the human record of 8 feet.

However, no single animal species matches the physical versatility of humans, which is what the Olympic Games are designed to showcase to best effect, Sharp concluded.

The article was published July 28 in the journal Veterinary Record.

Skin cancer: serious. The protective hat? Not so much ...

That bright thing in the sky is the sun.

And that giant thing obstructing you from seeing the sun, a sort of man-made eclipse? That's my hat.

I am sorry. I regret to inform you: I have become a giant hat person.

It is big. It is round. It is sombrero-like. There are rings of Saturn smaller than my hat. Small airplanes could land on its brim. Next week, stop by after 1 p.m. for a free frappuccino because a Starbucks is thinking of opening there.

The giant hat, ordinarily reserved for cowboys and Indiana Jones and the mariachi band that sometimes plays your favorite Mexican restaurant, is new this summer. And already I feel like I am years late in joining this exclusive club.

The Centers for Disease Control suggests in nearly every bit of paperwork to wear a hat with a wide brim to help prevent skin cancer. Studies have found a hat also keeps ticks at bay.

Skin cancer among young adults is on the rise. More than 50 percent of those ages 18 to 39 report having a sunburn in the past year. (And by my own experience, that sounds ridiculously low.) Sunburns, unfortunately, are not unusual. For me, they're as frequent as pizza on a Friday night.

This summer, the temperature has been unrelenting. Again. And if you believe - like I do - that this weather is not some kind of statistical anomaly, well, get used to it. And then get used to my giant wide-brimmed hat.

Better yet, get your own. The wide-brim hat is here to stay. It's the hat of the future.

Mine is beige. Khaki if you must. I bought it last year on sale from the clearance rack at REI. It is floppy and washable. I have a giant noggin, and it fits nicely.

I am fair-skinned, not quite translucent, but more like an unmuddied baseball. I generously apply sunscreen, but it washes off, rinses off, sweats off. It can be hard to remember. Turtlenecks seemed impractical. So I converted to the Wild West look. I wear a hat.

Do I look ridiculous? Yup.So much of my face is in the shadows I might as well be Batman.

But look again. Instead, see me as an adventurer off to explore untamed lawns and carefully curated beachs. By the squint in my eyes, you can tell that I am staring off into the great vast wilderness of Hampton Roads, into some baseball game in the park, some fire pit waiting for a party, some beer that needs a koozie.

Look again and I am a cowboy wrasslin' with a grocery bag from the back seat, oblivious to an unforgiving and blistering sun.

Look again, and one of my neighbors is asking: "Mike, why's your hat so big? Does that thing get DirecTV?"

Laugh now, kemosabe. You have seen my kind. Pale. And in a hat. Not just at the beach, but in the yard, at your party, walking the dog, even strolling indoors past a large window.

Is it embarrassing to wear a giant hat instead of, say, a cap that mentions my favorite team? Sure. Have I heard the taunts from those who want to see my skin turn a pinkish strawberry color? Undoubtedly.

"Enjoy the safari, Grusser!" their eyes scream when I'm walking the 10 feet to the mailbox. Or, "Are you going to the Kentucky Derby?" - to which my eyes yell back, "I will see creatures of which you cannot even fathom when you are dead from cancer!"

We must accept the wide-brim hat just like we accept rolled-up short sleeves that highlight your tattoos. It is a staple of modern fashion. And safety.

I wear my hat today in hopes of looking ridiculous again tomorrow.

(AP) ? In a way it was inevitable, given the size and scope of the event that is taking place in this most multicultural of capitals.

But the Olympic-sized political gaffes and cultural goofs already registered before the games officially open Friday have proven one thing in the globalized planet of the early 21st century: Even with the best of intentions, organizing an offense-free Olympics is nearly impossible.

On Thursday, three issues rankled some Muslim activists:

?A "Welcome to London" street sign written in Arabic that was virtually indecipherable, with the characters written backward.

?A ruling that one of Saudi Arabia's two female athletes couldn't wear a headscarf for her judo competitions because of safety concerns.

?And an insistence that two Moroccan soccer players produce a urine sample for doping tests, even though they were fasting for Ramadan and needed more than two hours to produce it.

"The reason we won the games was because London was diverse, it's where the world is represented," said Mohammed Shafiq, head of the Manchester-based Ramadan Foundation, which seeks to forge understanding among Britain's different communities.

"But," he said, "we're seeing decisions that are being made that will have a negative impact on the beliefs of Muslim athletes, and Muslim fans and officials."

Already, the International Olympic Committee and Prime Minister David Cameron have apologized profusely for the most blatant mistake to date: displaying South Korea's flag rather than North Korea's on a giant screen ahead of Pyongyang's inaugural women's soccer match Wednesday night. The flap sent the North's team off the pitch for an hour in protest.

On Thursday, two other geopolitical gaffes surfaced: Welsh soccer player Joe Allen was listed as English in the official program, and some athletes who were born in then-Soviet Ukraine were listed as having been born in the "Ukraine region" of Russia. Others were listed as coming from the Ukrainian cities of Lutsk and Lviv, which were described in the program as Russian. Similar mistakes were made for Georgia-born athletes.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko said Kiev's embassy in London had complained to the IOC and requested corrections.

"The word 'region' is obviously excessive," he tweeted, referring to the centuries of Russian dominance that ended when Ukraine gained its independence in 1991. "It's an incompetent mistake even from the point of view of English grammar."

London organizing spokeswoman Joanne Manning-Cooper acknowledged the mistakes but tried to put them in context.

"We've got 200 competing nations from all over the world, a multitude of religions," she said. "Over the past seven years we've worked hard to make sure this really is everyone's games, no matter where you're from or what your beliefs."

Part of that involved creating a committee of representatives of different faiths to ensure no one would feel excluded by the games. But given the vast numbers of people and events involved ? 650 sporting events, nearly 10,000 athletes over 17 days ? mistakes are bound to happen.

"If we make mistakes, we fix them immediately and aim to ensure they never happen again," she said.

For Saudi Arabia's Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, it's not so much a mistake as a safety ruling that could jeopardize her participation in the games.

On Thursday, the International Judo Federation ruled she couldn't wear a headscarf during competition because of safety concerns given the strangleholds and chokeholds that are often used.

Shahrkhani is one of the first two Saudi women allowed to participate in the Olympics; the other, Sarah Attar is expected to wear a headscarf when she competes in distance running.

Asian judo federations have previously allowed Muslim women to wear the hijab during major competitions, but the IJF decided against it this time around.

"Someone wearing a headscarf could put their opponent at a disadvantage if the headscarf gets in the way and you're not able to grip properly," said Szandra Szogedi, a Hungarian fighter who just missed out on the Olympics and is helping the Hungarian team during the games.

Judo fighters typically struggle to get a grip on each other's uniform and frequently reach behind their opponent's head to get a dominant position on the base of their neck.

"But on the other hand, the headscarf could be dangerous for the woman wearing it, because if I try to strangle you and somehow pull your scarf around into a more dangerous position," she said.

Shafiq, of the Ramadan Foundation, said allowances should be made particularly for people of different faiths.

"It's not about political correctness," he said. "It's about being aware of the sensitivities around this, and positively embracing the diversity."

DOJ: Family Can't Run Their Business as Catholics Home - Ozark ...

William, Paul and James Newland and their sister, Christine? Ketterhagen, who together own Hercules Industries, have no right to? conduct their family business in a manner that comports with their? Catholic faith.

The Newland family owns and operates Hercules Industries, a? Colorado-based corporation that manufactures heating, ventilation and? air-conditioning equipment. Through their hard work and dedication, and? through their willingness to reinvest their own money in building their? family business, they have managed to create jobs for 265 people while? exerting a positive influence on the communities they serve.

The? Newlands believe the morality the Catholic faith teaches them must? animate their lives not only within the walls of the churches they? attend, but literally everywhere else, as well ? in the way they deal? with their families, their neighbors and, yes, their business.

The? Newlands sued to protect their free exercise of religion in this regard? because Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a? regulation, under the Obamacare law, that requires virtually all health?care plans to cover ? without cost-sharing ? sterilizations, artificial? contraception and abortifacients.

The federal government can and will compel them? to either surrender their business or to engage in activities the? Catholic faith teaches are intrinsically immoral. This is exactly what President Barack Obama?s Justice Department told a U.S. district court in a formal filing last week.

Never? before has an administration attempted to strip Americans? of the freedom of conscience ? a right for which, over the centuries,? many Christian martyrs have laid down their lives, and which our? Founding Fathers took great care to protect in a First Amendment that? expressly guarantees the free exercise of religion.

What do you say we ?REPEAL OBAMACARE, IMPEACH THIS PRESIDENT AND DISSOLVE HIS ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION!!!?
