Women's rights group protest against impunity of ... - Minivan News

Women?s rights group protest against impunity of Civil Service Commission President following sexual harassment allegations thumbnail

Local NGO Voice of Women (VoW) held a protest outside the Maldivian Civil Service Commission (CSC) on Friday (March 28) to oppose the return CSC President Mohamed Fahmy, after the Supreme Court dismissed parliamentary findings in a sexual?harassment?matter and permitted him to return to work.

Fahmy returned to work on March 17 following a Supreme Court ruling three days earlier, stating that Fahmy?s removal from his position by parliament was unconstitutional. According to the judgment, Fahmy was to be reinstated and compensated for lost wages since December 2012.

The 6-1 majority opinion of the Supreme Court bench held that Parliament?s Independent Institutions Committee violated due process and criminal justice procedures in its sexual harassment inquiry, and that Fahmy would receive two punishments for the same crime if he was convicted at court following his dismissal by parliament ? double jeopardy).

The group of a dozen vocal protesters marched in the rain from parliament to the CSC, where they waited with placards for Fahmy to emerge. Some of these messages read: ?sos save the csc from Fahmy,? ?zero tolerance for sexual harassment,? ?supreme court wake up,? ?no more excuses, no more abuses,? ?my body my rights,? ?the workplace should be safe and free from oppression.?

VoW President Haifa Naeem explained to Minivan News that sexual harassment in the workplace is an endemic issue and that ?victims are being re-victimised by the state?. VoW is urging parliament to?fast track the sexual harassment bill.

?Once Fahmy?s integrity was lost, he should not be at the CSC. We are standing here with enough evidence that he has been sexually harassing people,? stated Naeem.

?Most women are afraid to come out because they are not protect by law or the state, but we are behind them,? she said.

VoW founding member Dr Abdul Malik echoed these sentiments.

?Systems are not in place to give necessary protection if women come out and voice these kinds of incidents,? Malik stated.

?We will back the victims to the extent civil society can, but its the responsibility of the state, judiciary and law makers who can do something, do more,? he added.

It is important to recognize what?s happening ?all around? the government and throughout the nation, VoW Treasurer Aminath Saeed told Minivan News.

Re-victimisation

The CSC employee who filed the complaint against Fahmy, Shahuma ?Shahu? Haleem, spoke with Minivan News about her experience.

?He?s been doing this for quite some time now. This was the first thing I heard when I came to office, but I never thought he was ever going to touch me.

She explained that whenever she hears her friends talking about being sexually harassed she urges them to ?speak up?.

?They are afraid of being fired, because he?s the ultimate boss [of the civil service]. Anyone cannot come out here today and do this. I can be fired and still survive, but not many people have that option,? Haleem stated.

Haleem explained that she filed complaints with parliament, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), and the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights. She claims the Gender Ministry did not even call her back.

The HRCM claimed that they had not received enough evidence to prove whether or not Fahmy had harassed the employee. In late November 2012, parliament dismissed Fahmy in a 38-32 vote after the Independent Institutions Committee investigated the complaint.

?Women are getting the wrong message, that some people are in fact untouchable,? stated Haleem.

?It?s been proven over again that he has lied and has in fact done it, but then the [Supreme] court rules in favor of him,? she added.

Government employee reactions

An long-term government employee in the crowd who asked not to be identified said workplace sexual?harassment?was a systemic problem throughout every government institution.

?That kind of harassment is totally accepted throughout our society. It has been tolerated for a long time and has become part of the Maldivian culture. People think that it is bound to happen when men and women are together,? she said.

?It?s because of the way women are perceived in society. We are see more as sexual objects, our productive role is less prominent, but our reproductive role is more [valued].

?Today?s protest is an important milestone because it has sparked debate. Even if you only see a few people here it speaks a lot for a country that has been suppressed for a long time. It is very brave for Shahu to bring this issue out into the open,? she added.

Other employees, both from the CSC and various government ministries, also spoke to Minivan News as they passed through the protest while leaving work.

Many said they do not know much about the issue, Fahmy or the allegations against him.

Others claimed sexual harassment ?is a pretty big issue, but no one talks about it?.

A Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture employee said he was aware of rumors that a lot of women faced sexual harassment and said he supported their cause.

?I also want women?s rights, but by protesting like this nothing will happen,? one woman declared.

A CSC employee told Minivan News that sexual harassment is a ?problem? but said that ?women are weak?.

?People don?t believe it is happening. They need to be more aware. Even in Shahu?s case most people didn?t find it a big deal,? another woman stated.

?People have to go to extreme lengths to show it?s actually sexual harassment,? she added.

Why Asia's elite is signing up for American MBAs - Fortune ...

UNC's Kenan Flagler Business School

UNC's Kenan Flagler Business School

By Lauren Everitt

(Poets&Quants) -- Why would Ning Zhai fly more than 7,300 miles to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for business classes? The 37-year-old already has an MBA and a successful career as the general manager for EasyWay Electronics, a high-tech manufacturer in Shanghai.

But Zhai, who also goes by Amy, recognized that Asia's business climate was changing. She believes she needs fresh knowledge about manufacturing, global supply chains, and international markets to stay competitive. So she enrolled in the Global Supply Chain Leaders Program, a dual-degree executive MBA program at the?Kenan-Flagler Business School?at the University of North Carolina and Tsinghua University in Beijing.

"I was young when I got my first MBA," she says, "but after working, I felt this program would improve me professionally. It would help improve my thinking from an international viewpoint."

Zhai isn't the first Chinese executive to turn westward for an executive education. The demand for advanced business degrees is growing among Asia's professional set, and American and European business schools are partnering with institutions in the East to offer executive MBA and other programs. China's rapid economic development has sparked a series of growing pains, including a shortage of managerial talent. Asia's business class is eager to fill that void and enrolling in EMBA programs.

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University teamed up with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to offer an executive MBA program that has snagged the top spot in the Financial Times' EMBA rankings for four years in a row. The business schools at University of Maryland and Arizona State University are among a handful of other American institutions that have established ties with China to offer EMBA programs. B-schools in other countries have also embraced the trend. INSEAD and the University of Western Ontario in Canada offer Chinese executives the opportunity to grab an international EMBA.

The UNC-Tsinghua program welcomed its first class of 24 Chinese executives, including four women, in October 2012. Similar to Zhai, the majority of students are experienced professionals -- they have an average of 21 years of work experience. For one-third of the program, students attend class in Beijing once a month from Friday to Sunday. The remaining portion is taught through global residencies and two 16-day sessions in Chapel Hill.

The program will set executives back $60,000, not including residency costs. But the sticker price didn't dissuade Dong Ren, 42, a manager at CITIC International Logistics. "It's a dream for me," he says. "I don't think it's too large of an investment." Ren is paying his own way through the program and aims to start a private company.

Demand for programs like the one at UNC partly stems from China's growing status as an economic heavyweight. As companies expand into new markets, executives are opting to acquire skills to take their businesses to the next level. In Zhai's case, her company is eyeing international expansion, particularly in the U.S. Her employer is paying for her degree so she'll be able to bring global supply chain expertise to bear on the company's growth plans.

Another UNC-Tsinghua student, Tiejun Liu, 39, saw value in broadening his global perspective. As the chief representative at Hong Kong Quam Securities, Liu has a wealth of experience in Asia's financial industry, but he wanted a better understanding of business theory. "It's a different way of thinking," he says. U.S. professors walk you through business cases, and their analyses offer a different viewpoint, he adds. The global residencies, which include trips to Dubai and Seattle, also provided opportunities to learn about different cultures and expand his worldview, Liu says.

The UNC-Tsinghua EMBA program is rather unique in that it offers a dual emphasis on business and engineering, says to Jayashankar M. Swaminathan, associate dean of the program. Graduates walk away with a master of business administration from UNC and a master of engineering management from Tsinghua.

The program initially focused on attracting students with a technical or manufacturing background who had assumed leaderships positions in business. But Swaminathan discovered that students with investment, finance, and marketing backgrounds were also signing up. "I think the program is going to be much broader than we initially thought," he says.

The students are also a bit older than many of their American or European counterparts. The average student age at the UNC-Tsinghua program is 41. By comparison, the average age of American EMBA students in 2010 was 37.1, according to Executive MBA Council data.? Swaminathan says that many students in China lacked access to cutting-edge management education after graduating from college. "Many of these people are not looking to make a career switch. They're looking to enrich their current careers even further."

But the program has faced some hiccups. "Anytime you're talking about collaboration across continents, it's challenging," Swaminathan says. "UNC is the oldest public university and so we have processes in place that we must adhere to. On the other hand, Tsinghua has its own set of regulations and policies, so coming up with a process and program that works at both ends was extremely challenging."

Fortunately, the students seem to be adjusting just fine. Zhai says one of the highlights of the program has been the UNC campus and the cuisine. "I like the food better than in China," she says with a laugh.

FX to launch new cable channel for younger adult audience

(Reuters) - FX Networks will launch a new cable channel aimed at young adults ages 18 to 34 with programming that includes current hit comedies "The League" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," executives said on Thursday.

The channel, called FXX, will debut September 2 and reach 74 million homes in its first year, News Corp-owned FX Networks said in a statement.

Adults aged 18 to 34 is one of the key demographic groups prized by advertisers. The FX channel is aimed at a slightly older audience, 18 to 49, while a third sister network, movie-focused FXM, is aimed at ages 25 to 54.

At its start, FXX will run four original comedies plus late-night show "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell," which will move over from FX along with "The League" and "Always Sunny." Acquired comedies and movies will fill out the schedule. The programming will later expand to include original dramas.

New bone survey method could aid long-term survival of Arctic caribou

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A study co-authored by a University of Florida scientist adds critical new data for understanding caribou calving grounds in an area under consideration for oil exploration in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The research may be used to create improved conservation strategies for an ecologically important area that has been under evaluation for natural resource exploration since enactment of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980.

By studying bone accumulations on the Arctic landscape, lead author Joshua Miller discovered rare habitats near river systems are more important for some caribou than previously believed. The study appearing online today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B shows bone surveys conducted on foot provide highly detailed and extensive data on areas used by caribou as birthing grounds.

"The bone surveys are adding a new piece of the puzzle, giving us a way of studying how caribou use the landscape during calving and providing a longer perspective for evaluating the importance of different regions and habitats," said Miller, an assistant scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus and a Fenneman assistant research professor at the University of Cincinnati.

Unlike other species in the deer family, both male and female caribou grow antlers. Males shed them after they mate, while pregnant females keep their antlers until they calve, losing them within a day or two of giving birth. Newborn caribou calves also suffer high mortality rates within the first couple days of birth. The female antlers and newborn skeletal remains offer a unique biological signal for understanding calving activity, Miller said.

"This new tool has a lot of potential, and the idea that these bones are providing new information is really exciting -- bone surveys allow us to go into the field today and collect historical information about ecosystems and animal communities that are sometimes only known from a few years of observation," Miller said.

Miller recorded evidence of shed caribou antlers and newborn skeletons from the Porcupine Caribou Herd in area 1002 on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge, which comprises about 1.5 million acres on Alaska's northeast border. Because these high-latitude habitats are frozen nearly three-quarters of the year, bones may be preserved on the landscape for hundreds or thousands of years, researchers said.

Testing two different habitats, the tussock tundra and riparian terraces, researchers found the latter has higher concentrations of shed female antlers and numerous newborn skeletons. The data suggests these terrace habitats are used more during some portions of the calving period than other areas traditionally viewed as primary calving terrain, which is important because they comprise less than 10 percent of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge calving grounds, Miller said.

"Bone surveys are suggesting that these riparian zones should be under special consideration as we think about how to manage the Arctic Refuge and ensure this herd prospers in the decades and centuries to come," Miller said.

The Porcupine Caribou Herd includes as many as 170,000 animals that are essential parts of the delicate Arctic ecosystem. These large, herbivorous, hoofed mammals are an important food source for many indigenous northern peoples and natural predators, including wolves, bears and eagles.

Anna Behrensmeyer, vertebrate paleontology curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, said that using skeletal remains as a research tool is important because it helps scientists understand which habitats need protection with minimal disruption to caribou calving. It also allows researchers to collect historical information that may be used to better understand how climate change and other human influences have affected how these animals use the landscape over time.

"We tend to think that what we see now is normal, but we're just seeing a little bit of time," said Behrensmeyer, who was not involved with the study. "Josh's work can extend our time window back maybe hundreds of years, so there's the chance of seeing long-term cycles in the calving areas and also correlating those cycles with climate -- if you can look back into the past, you might see what this species did to adapt its reproductive strategies to warmer or colder climate periods."

Study co-authors include Patrick Druckenmiller of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum and Volker Bahn of Wright State University.

Foodpanda Takes Over Hungarian Rival After Only ... - The Next Web

Online food delivery is a hot space, with heavily-financed European startups such as Just-Eat, Delivery Hero, Lieferando and others quickly trying to gain market share all across the world.

The Samwer brothers? Rocket Internet accelerator has got some skin in the game as well with its Foodpanda / HelloFood business, which it has been launching in a slew of countries worldwide at its typical rapid pace.

Today, Foodpanda is announcing that it has acquired Hungarian online food ordering service provider ?telvitel KFT, a mere three months after launching in the country.

According to a press statement, Etelvitel currently boasts more than 200 partner restaurants (only in Budapest, though).

After this move, Foodpanda delivers food in Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Russia, Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Pakistan, Argentina and Venezuela.

25countries Foodpanda devours Hungarian food ordering rival Ételvitel after only 3 months [Interview]

We caught up with Ralf Wenzel, Foodpanda?s global managing director, to learn more about the move and the company?s overall strategy.

TNW: Foodpanda essentially lets people order food online. What makes it special compared to other Internet food delivery services?

RW sw Foodpanda devours Hungarian food ordering rival Ételvitel after only 3 months [Interview]

RW: Food delivery is all about choice, quality and convenience. We aim to offer the broadest choice of restaurants and covering every possible regional area and city. We ensure highest quality standards by rating and assessing all restaurants, taking into consideration our customers? recommendations and feedback.

Foodpanda provides a very simple, fast and convenient way for ordering food, online and through mobile channels. We also feel responsible for the fast delivery and the overall service.

If the restaurant does not offer delivery, we will do it.

How many countries are you in now, and which countries or regions are up next?

We are already the most global food delivery service: Foodpanda with our affiliated brand HelloFood targets by now 3 billion people worldwide, which is almost half of the world population.

At the moment, we deliver food in 25 countries, focusing on markets like Brazil, India, Russia or Singapore.

In the last couple of months alone, we were able to bring Foodpanda to 14 more countries, serving an additional number of over 800 million people.

Is this basically a numbers game, where you roll out as quickly in as many countries as possible, or is each regional launch carefully considered and assessed?

The nice thing about food delivery is that it works pretty much everywhere, since everywhere people are interested in food and more people become aware of the possibility of ordering food online. Though we always analyze new markets very carefully, look into local infrastructure, cultural behavior, Internet penetration and the competitive landscape.

Based on that we decide about the next countries to launch. And even though this is a global business model, some countries qualify much more than others. I think our central team in Berlin has learned a lot from our local teams and vice versa. We believe in investing in opportunities but always focus on feasibility and quality.

Where is most growth coming from, geographically speaking, from a user and revenue perspective?

Foodpanda is already famous in Asia, since we had a bit of a head start there and in some Asian countries we are the market leader already. But Africa, Latin America and especially Eastern Europe are catching up really fast. One example is Hungary: we have just started 3 months ago but we are already taking over the service of our competitor ?telvitel KFT.

In just one step, we now cooperate with more than 200 new partner restaurants to guarantee the greatest variety.

This takeover is the logical consequence of our worldwide expansion. Foodpanda is a global movement.

You recently became Foodpanda?s global MD ? what differences in culture between different countries and regions have you encountered that Foodpanda has had to adapt to?

Food belongs to every country?s culture and is a central part of everyone?s daily life. As such there are more similarities than differences. However people?s preferences differ from country to country and this can be sometimes very surprising to us.

In Senegal, the most ordered food is croissants, whereas the Vietnamese favor Mexican food. Overall, we adapt to local cultures by always offering a customized choice of the best and most recommended cuisines and restaurants.

The fact that people share one culture doesn?t mean that they all prefer the same meal. Our goal is that people immediately think of Foodpanda when they think about food, no matter what cuisine.

What?s the ratio between customer orders from mobile versus the Web? What about Android vs. iOS?

Our mobile app is now available in 21 countries: the number of customers using our mobile service has been growing rapidly. At the moment, Web predominates but we expect that the mobile orders are going to pick up even more in the future. iOS is used twice as much as Android for now but this also differs widely from country to country. It?s important for us to accept orders through all locally important online channels.

What?s the deal with marketing both foodpanda and hellofood? Or will they be folded under the same umbrella brand in the future ? and if so, which one?

In Asia and Eastern Europe, we work as Foodpanda; in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America we are called HelloFood. We set the same ambitious standards and the service remains the same. We have a strong central team in Berlin and local experts in all of our countries.

This close cooperation creates perfect synergy. The whole coordination is done in Berlin with central teams for IT, Product, Marketing and Business Intelligence. The centralization enables us to expand into new countries very fast, both as Foodpanda and HelloFood.

You face quite some stiff competition from Just-Eat, Delivery Hero and others, all of which are heavily funded and also expanding internationally fast. Do you see consolidation on the horizon, or is there room for many players in this field?

The majority of the market is unexplored. Most customers still order their food offline, via phone. The next years we will see a big shift in offline to online.

Offering the widest reach of the best restaurants, having an easy to use product and an overall outstanding customer journey will allow us to capture a large part of this growing market. And the reality proves us right: Once people come to our website they come back again and again.

Most importantly, we know our customers. This enables us to be successful in such diverse markets. We already have a big network of restaurant partners and a robust supply and distribution.

How does Rocket Internet, and your experience working for other Samwer brothers-founded ventures in the past, help you scale the business?

I have now been working in the Internet industry for about 10 years and many experiences can be used and leveraged.

But still, every venture is different and performance management on this global scale is an exciting challenge. We are a very young venture and profit a lot from Rocket Internet?s expertise. Our growth in 25 countries would not have been possible without them.

Popularity helps buffer Apple from Chinese state-media attacks

By Melanie Lee

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese Internet users are crying foul over the perceived unfair treatment doled out to Apple Inc by state-run media which has actively criticized the smartphone maker for the past two weeks over its warranty policy.

Apple and Volkswagen AG were singled out on March 15 by state-run China Central Television in its annual corporate malpractice expose. CCTV accused Apple of having discriminatory after-sales service in China compared to the rest of the world.

Other state-run outlets have also run articles and editorials criticizing Apple. On Wednesday, the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, ran an editorial attacking Apple for being filled with "unparalleled arrogance".

The editorial was rapidly shared by thousands of micro bloggers on Sina Corp's Weibo platform but panned by many users who discredited the newspaper.

"Shameless People's Daily jealously scolding people... A brain-dead product of the Cultural Revolution, old and so disgusting," said one micro blogger.

Other users were upset at the targeting of a foreign firm over a petty issue.

"We ordinary people feel that Apple is good and the government is trash. There's obviously an implemented warranty policy, why must (Apple) be treated differently?" said one user.

Another user asked where the newspaper was when it came to reporting on corrupt on local ministries and poisonous milk.

"Do you wish to transfer our focus? Get the ordinary people to curse and blame useless things? There's toxic air, toxic water and tainted milk...We are not fools!" said another user.

The intense push-back from Internet users indicates the strong reputation of Apple in China and shows the waning ability of China's state propaganda apparatus to manage opinion online, analysts say.

"Some users may feel that there is an agenda behind focusing on Apple that has more to do with pointing the finger at a famous international brand than the desire to highlight genuine concerns for consumers," said Torsten Stocker, head of Monitor Deloitte's Greater China consumer and retail practice.

Foreign firms are often taken to task very publicly in China where their businesses and reputations are on the line. Late last year, Yum Brands Inc's said its sales suffered after CCTV ran a report on the use of antibiotics in its KFC chickens.

That story went viral on Weibo, which has over 500 million users, and many Weibo users criticized Yum's handling of the incident. Facebook and Twitter are blocked in China and Beijing faces the constant headache on how to balance censorship while letting its citizens blow off steam.

Apple said in a statement on Saturday that it respected Chinese consumers and that its warranty policies were roughly the same worldwide with specific adjustments to adhere to Chinese law.

"Apple has come out relatively unscathed in this situation because consumers have had largely positive experiences with the brand," said Benjamin Cavender, associate principal analyst at China Market Research in Shanghai.

As for Volkswagen, CCTV said the direct shift gearbox transmission was causing some cars to speed up or slow down during driving.

Last week Volkswagen, which sells more cars in China than any other foreign firm, said it would recall 384,181 vehicles there to fix the problem.

Moen retirees to lose health care insurance - The Chronicle-Telegram

LORAIN ? Judy Starcovic was one of nearly 230 Moen Inc. retirees who opened letters last week informing them their company-provided health care insurance will end as of Jan. 1, 2014.

?I was there 35 years and they told me I had health care with them,? Starcovic, 71, said Monday.

The letter, which was signed by Moen President David Lingafelter, informed retirees that as of Jan. 1, Moen will no longer offer health care insurance to approximately 440 retirees in the U.S., including the almost 230 who live in Northeast Ohio and the rest of the state, according to Robyn Hill, Moen vice president of human resources.

Hill cited the cost of insurance, coupled with adapting the company?s health care to conform to changes mandated by the health care reform bill for its current workers as the reason for the change. Those moves include extending the coverage to age 26 for dependents and paying 100 percent coverage for birth control.

Moen also eliminated two of three insurance plans offered to employees in favor of a higher deductible insurance plan, Hill said.

The firm employs approximately 1,800 workers across the U.S., including about 650 in Northeast Ohio.

Starcovic said she had talked with a few fellow retirees of the well-known faucet manufacturer, which had an Elyria facility on Foster Avenue until it closed in 2008. The company has been headquartered in North Olmsted since 1994.

?Everybody is mad and upset,? Starcovic said.

Starcovic, who retired in 2006, worked in a variety of jobs during her 35 years with the company. Those jobs ranged from making faucets and packing them for shipment, to working as a janitor and in shipping.

Moen is not the first company to drop health insurance coverage for Medicare-eligible retirees.

In 1993, 40 percent of employers with 500 or more workers offered coverage, but that number had fallen to 16 percent by 2011, according to a website operated by Kaiser Health News.

Moen retirees had been covered by a number of different insurers in the past several years, but those changes did not hurt benefits, according to Starcovic.

?It?s always been pretty good coverage, with very good prescription benefits, too,? she said.

Starcovic has been paying $29 a month for her insurance through deductions from her pension checks, but now she?s worried about how much new insurance from a carrier not affiliated with the company is going to cost her.

She and other retirees received with the letter booklets detailing Extend Health, a nationwide company offering some 4,000 different plans from about 80 insurance carriers to about 500,000 retirees, according to www.kaiserhealthnews.org.

Starcovic has diabetes, which means she takes prescription medication, some of which currently cost her only $4 or $7 for a 90-day supply.

?The older you get, the more medication you need,? Starcovic said.

Hill declined to provide figures on what retirees might expect to pay for insurance obtained through Extend Health.

?There are so many variables such as a person?s health, medications they take, what doctors they see and how often, and income,? Hill said.

Moen hopes retirees will be ready to choose and enroll in a supplemental health care insurance plan by October during an open enrollment period.

?We don?t want people to buy insurance they might not need, nor do we want them to short-change themselves and not get enough coverage,? Hill said.

Moen will not offer money to help retirees pay for health care insurance, as some companies do.

?That is why we wanted to give people as much notice as we could,? Hill said.

Q. Relationships and Weight. Not Mine, His. He's So Skinny: My boyfriend of three years is a smart, funny, caring guy and we love each other very much. The problem is that during the past year and a half he has lost an extreme amount of weight that he really didn't need to lose. He's super, super skinny and unhealthy looking. Friends and family are concerned he's seriously ill. He insists he is fine and his most recent check-up didn't reveal any physical problems. My problem? His weight loss (done without exercise, BTW) has left him a very different person: unable to exercise without being exhausted quickly, unable to engage in sex fully because anything but "girl on top" is too tiring, and so very moody. I've tried for the last two years for him to get help and I'm frustrated he can't or won't seek it. In addition, I'm a curvy girl who has always had body-image issues. He loves my body but it's been a long road to feeling attractive. Having my boyfriend weigh less than me, wear a smaller size than me, eat less (sometimes only a meal a day), etc., is bringing back all those feelings of being "big" and unattractive. Issues I've worked hard to get past. Am I a horrible person that I'm considering breaking up with him because he won't talk to doctor seriously about this and it is having a negative impact on most every part of our lives together?

A: Something alarming is going on with your boyfriend, so please don't make this an issue about how he's "fat shaming" you because he's gotten so thin. Leave your size issues out of this: Don't compare your waist measurements, just tell him you're profoundly concerned that he is in a health crisis. Point out that he is exhausted and moody all the time, doesn't even have the energy for sex, and his refusal to eat more than one meal a day is having a negative impact on his health and your relationship. Ask as a favor to you if he will make a follow-up appointment with his doctor and allow you to come. If he does, you can point out to the doctor the changes over the last 18 months and its effects on your boyfriend. If he won't let you do it, say that your relationship is on the line. Explain this is not because you don't love him, but because something is dangerously wrong and you don't know what to do anymore if he won't acknowledge it or let you help.

Dear Prudence: Annoying Bromance

Q. Camming: I'm a young female who happens to have a semi-secret job. I happen to do live sex shows online for pay. I work a few different websites and my income for an average week is in the four-figure range. I have a few friends who know and a loving boyfriend who is supportive (and even joins in on occasion). My problem is that on these websites I'm usually on the first page. My family has no idea that I perform online porn but it's bound to come out sometime. Do I tell them what I do or wait for the cat to come out the bag?

A: I don't think people should consider their privacy-protected Facebook maunderings to be truly private. Anything that's online has the potential to be seen by anyone with an Internet connection. So the idea that you can perform sex online and expect to keep that pussy cat in the box is ridiculous. Though your question is whether you tell your family you are a porn star, I think your concern about this coming out should give you pause about your line of work, no matter how lucrative. Someday you'll age out of this career, and you have to be aware what you've done can follow you for the rest of your life. But if you're OK with that, then I don't think you have to pre-emptively give everyone you love conniptions. If they find out, then calmly confirm that it's true, say you know they may not be approve, but you've entered into this work fully aware of its consequences.

Q. Wedding Dress Etiquette: Our daughter is getting married this summer in a lovely outdoor setting, there will be a rehearsal and mid-afternoon lunch/dinner the day before with just close family and bridal party, about 20 people. When I was married in the ?70s I sewed my own dress, an Yves Saint Laurent peasant dress pattern in a cotton/poly blend, embroidered with white violets. I loved it then and I love it now. I have never worn it again though I have thought about doing it many, many times. The only clue that it was a wedding dress is that it is white. It would fit in perfectly in a summer tea party at some old/vintage hotel setting. Before I ask the kids if they would approve, what do you think of my asking them if I could wear it to the rehearsal and dinner the day before the wedding? I don't want to be accused of upstaging the bride; on the other hand, there is a tradition of something old/something new and many brides wearing their mother's and grandmother's dresses. But the MoB wearing her own old (un-)wedding dress? An outside perspective would be most appreciated.

A: Forget the Miss Havisham look. For more than 30 years you've never found the right occasion to reuse your frock, and I think you should stick with the decision to keep it in the closet. I'm betting it would produce fewer reactions of "How lovely" and more "I didn't know Lindsey's mother was so eccentric." Keep your dress preserved and maybe someday you will have granddaughters who will delight in playing dress-up in it.

Q. Re: Attending doctors? appointments with loved one: Often I read that you advise people to attend physician appointments with the person who has a health issue. Outside of a minor child or a medical power of attorney, is this encouraged by the doctor? Aren't there some issues involved with letting a third party into a doctor's appointment? Isn't couples counseling a more appropriate avenue for group discussion, instead of a physician?

A: I've done it when the issue has been a serious one and I've never had a doctor object. A person with cancer, or myriad other distressing illnesses may not be in the best position to process the doctor's information. That's why it can be very helpful to have a loved one there, taking notes, asking for clarification, and conveying information to the doctor that the patient may not even be fully aware of. Of course this has to be with the full agreement of the patient and the family member has to be appropriately restrained and respectful. But something's wrong if a young man has lost such an alarming amount of weight and can't function and he says his doctor declares him fine.

FDA delays approval of GSK bird flu vaccine

LONDON (Reuters) - Regulators have delayed approval of an H5N1 bird flu vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline, designed to be used in a pandemic.

A spokesman for Britain's biggest drugmaker said the delay was not related to recent controversy over links between a similar flu vaccine made by the company and narcolepsy.

Rather, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided it needed more time to assess the product "due to an administrative matter that has recently been rectified", GSK said in a statement on Monday.

"GSK and the FDA are actively working together to complete the review in a timely manner," it added.

There is growing evidence of a link between GSK's earlier H1N1 flu vaccine, Pandemrix, and an increase in narcolepsy cases among children who received it in Europe - a fact which has raised questions as to whether the FDA should approve the similar H5N1 product.

Both vaccines contain AS03, a new adjuvant, or booster, that turbo-charges the body's immune response to a vaccine.

A 14-member panel of advisers to the FDA voted unanimously in November to recommend the H5N1 vaccine to protect against bird flu. The panel considered early studies from Europe showing an increase in the number of narcolepsy cases but concluded that the potential benefit of the vaccine outweighed the risk.

Since then, however, new data, including study results from Britain, suggest the scale and strength of the narcolepsy link to Pandemrix during the 2009-10 H1N1 swine flu pandemic could be greater than first thought.

Officials at the FDA were not immediately available to comment on the case.

Engaging Specialty Practices in the Patient Centered Medical ...

?Kicking off ?March 25, the Patient Centered Specialty Practice (PCSP) recognition highlights specialty practices committed to access, communication and care coordination as ?neighbors? that surround and inform the medical home and colleagues in primary care, according to NCQA.? And I regret to say that I missed the informational webinar, including an NCQA advisor and guest speaker from one of the local healthcare systems.

Had I attended the webinar, I would have been better prepared to query the CEO of a hospital within the same healthcare system at a recent American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) function.? Interestingly, we had a lengthy conversation regarding the system?s desire to exchange data within the area; however, the CEO noted that current system architecture made it challenging enough to simply share information amongst health system participants.? With one of the key tenets for the PCSP recognition being timely exchange of data, this is a bit of a conundrum.? While the Direct project offers a simple solution, the ultimate goal will be to facilitate and encourage physicians to search for records in efforts to keep all parties abreast of the care plan.? And while this is a tremendous step, we also noted that retail & urgent care clinics, solo primary care practices and free-standing care centers need to get in on the game too.

I also see a need for ancillary providers to be included as well. ?Not only would individuals benefit from the opportunity to view x-rays but, more to the point, visualizations,?similar to the one here.? While Physical Therapists do an excellent job engaging patients in discussion, they would have far greater impact with the ability to illustrate their points on an interactive tablet app.? And thinking out loud, wouldn?t it be great for individuals to be able to reference the same app at home ? to review the information and implement ?their? steps in the care plan?

?

Shutterfly sues to shut down Kodak photo app

(Reuters) - Photo service Shutterfly Inc has sued to shut down an Eastman Kodak Co app that lets users purchase photo albums made from pictures stored on Facebook Inc's social media network, according to court documents.

Shutterfly bought the Kodak Gallery online photo business for $23.8 million last year, and as part of the deal Kodak agreed not to set up a duplicate business, according to court documents.

Shutterfly said in a complaint filed on Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan that the "My Kodak Moments App" violates the sale agreement by setting up a competing business.

The app allows users to choose photos on Facebook to create an album which is then printed and sent to the consumer.

The complaint also alleged it is powered by the same technology that powered the business that Shutterfly purchased.

A Kodak spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy early last year.

It said on Friday it had closed on its $848 million finance package that helps prepare it to exit bankruptcy in the middle of this year. The company plans to focus on its commercial imaging business after it reorganizes.

The case is In re: Eastman Kodak Co et al, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-10202.

AdvSecret.com Ideas To Grow Your Business Online | AdvSecret.com

By Steve Ridgeway

Internet marketing has brought great success and recognition to many small business. It allows business to reach a customer base all over the entire world in the click of a mouse. This article can help you to understand internet marketing and find the niche of it that is perfect for your business.

Tracking your leads generated from your site or blog, is a great way to stay out in front of the entire marketing process. You won?t receive a lot of leads some days and on other days, you will receive quite a few. Could this be your fault? Track your leads, in order to find out exactly what?s going on.

You may wonder exactly who is visiting your website. This is a mystery that is easily solved. There are free analytic tools on the Internet that will give you detailed information: who comes, when and what do they do once they reach your site. This will give you a clear idea of which tools have brought visitors to your site, and ideas for planning to bring more.

Avoid using the meta refresh tag to set up redirects for your site. Unfortunately the use of meta refresh tags is a common tactic for spammer sites so the search engines rank down sites that use them. Use a 301 redirect instead for sending readers to a new URL.

Headlines are a great way to get attention with your regular e-zine. Make sure that every e-zine you send out has a catchy, imploring message that sticks out to your subscribers and makes them want to read more. You can also use a basic graphics program to make professional looking graphics to make your headlines pop. If you go this route, ensure your images have descriptions so people using text to speech programs can access them. Tweaking the appearance of your internet marketing website can result in an increase in sales for your business. Try moving your ?Buy Now? button to a different location to see if it gets more use. Find out if a different color scheme induces your customers to linger a bit longer on your website.

Do not put too many banners on your site. A site full of banners is not attractive, and will be repulsive for visitors to your site. You probably will not get hits on the banners, as there are too many, and will look crowded and cluttered. Add only a few relative banners to your site.

There is not question that doing any type of internet marketing without analytics is not going to work in your favor. You need to be able to analyze what is going on in terms of the sales of your business. You can see which items are getting a lot of attention, though not getting a lot of sales, and fix this to increase your productivity.

Marketing directly to your potential customers is something that takes time, so remember that any campaign must be an ongoing campaign. Many Internet marketers take a fly-by approach to marketing. They will work to market to a particular segment, but they?ll only stick with it for a day or two. You need to stay at it until you see results, and then keep it up.

To consider which forms of social media might best help you market your small business, remember that, just like with marketing offline, internet marketing will be the most effective if you carefully plan your marketing campaign. Who is your target audience? Will a newsletter or emails best suit your goals, or are other forms of social media perhaps better suite

After reading through all of that, do you still see internet marketing in the same way? Do you now see that it is so much more and that they are very simple things that you can add promote your business? There is work involved, but you decide on how much to put into it.

I really found this site to be full of great ideas, and a second site is this one.

Depression stems from miscommunication between brain cells; Study challenges role of serotonin in depression

Mar. 18, 2013 ? A new study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine suggests that depression results from a disturbance in the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. The study indicates a major shift in our understanding of how depression is caused and how it should be treated. Instead of focusing on the levels of hormone-like chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, the scientists found that the transmission of excitatory signals between cells becomes abnormal in depression.

The research, by senior author Scott M. Thompson, Ph.D., Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was published online in the March 17 issue of Nature Neuroscience.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2005 and 2008, approximately one in 10 Americans were treated for depression, with women more than twice as likely as men to become depressed. The most common antidepressant medications, such as Prozac, Zoloft and Celexa, work by preventing brain cells from absorbing serotonin, resulting in an increase in its concentration in the brain. Unfortunately, these medications are effective in only about half of patients. Because elevation of serotonin makes some depressed patients feel better, it has been thought for over 50 years that the cause of depression must therefore be an insufficient level of serotonin. The new University of Maryland study challenges that long-standing explanation.

"Dr. Thompson's groundbreaking research could alter the field of psychiatric medicine, changing how we understand the crippling public health problem of depression and other mental illness," says E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Maryland and John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and Dean at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "This is the type of cutting-edge science that we strive toward at the University of Maryland, where discoveries made in the laboratory can impact the clinical practice of medicine."

Depression affects more than a quarter of all U.S. adults at some point in their lives, and the World Health Organization predicts that by 2020 it will be the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression is also the leading risk factor for suicide, which causes twice as many deaths as murder, and is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds.

The first major finding of the study was the discovery that serotonin has a previously unknown ability to strengthen the communication between brain cells. "Like speaking louder to your companion at a noisy cocktail party, serotonin amplifies excitatory interactions in brain regions important for emotional and cognitive function and apparently helps to make sure that crucial conversations between neurons get heard," says Dr. Thompson. "Then we asked, does this action of serotonin play any role in the therapeutic action of drugs like Prozac?"

To understand what might be wrong in the brains of patients with depression and how elevating serotonin might relieve their symptoms, the study team examined the brains of rats and mice that had been repeatedly exposed to various mildly stressful conditions, comparable to the types of psychological stressors that can trigger depression in people.

The researchers could tell that their animals became depressed because they lost their preference for things that are normally pleasurable. For example, normal animals given a choice of drinking plain water or sugar water strongly prefer the sugary solution. Study animals exposed to repeated stress, however, lost their preference for the sugar water, indicating that they no longer found it rewarding. This depression-like behavior strongly mimics one hallmark of human depression, called anhedonia, in which patients no longer feel rewarded by the pleasures of a nice meal or a good movie, the love of their friends and family, and countless other daily interactions.

A comparison of the activity of the animals' brain cells in normal and stressed rats revealed that stress had no effect on the levels of serotonin in the 'depressed' brains. Instead, it was the excitatory connections that responded to serotonin in strikingly different manner. These changes could be reversed by treating the stressed animals with antidepressants until their normal behavior was restored.

"In the depressed brain, serotonin appears to be trying hard to amplify that cocktail party conversation, but the message still doesn't get through," says Dr. Thompson. Using specially engineered mice created by collaborators at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the study also revealed that the ability of serotonin to strengthen excitatory connections was required for drugs like antidepressants to work.

Sustained enhancement of communication between brain cells is considered one of the major processes underlying memory and learning. The team's observations that excitatory brain cell function is altered in models of depression could explain why people with depression often have difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions. Additionally, the findings suggest that the search for new and better antidepressant compounds should be shifted from drugs that elevate serotonin to drugs that strengthen excitatory connections.

"Although more work is needed, we believe that a malfunction of excitatory connections is fundamental to the origins of depression and that restoring normal communication in the brain, something that serotonin apparently does in successfully treated patients, is critical to relieving the symptoms of this devastating disease," Dr. Thompson explains.

The virtues of Indonesian at Rickshaw Republic | Restaurant ...

Tommy Setiawan wants you to know that the egg noodles that come in a bowl of pempek telor at Rickshaw Republic are always served cold. If you, like a certain unenlightened Yelper he's become aware of, want them warm, he will see that you get them warm. But you should be advised that on the streets of Palembang in South Sumatra where Setiawan's wife, Elice, grew up, they are served cold, and that's the way they serve them by default at the city's newest and only Indonesian restaurant.

The noodles might be cold?more like room temperature, actually?but the yellow spaghettilike tangle is served alongside a hot, deep-fried, sliced fish cake that tightly jackets a hard-cooked egg. And noodles and egg rest in a warm bath of dark, chiled vinegar broth so that each bite is a changeable mix of springy, snappy textures and contrasting temperatures that, unless you're numb to all sensation, will capture and hold your attention.

Setiawan so wants you to understand and appreciate this unusual dish, and the others on the menu, that he's likely to visit your table, unroll a map of Indonesia's 17,000-some islands, and show you precisely where it comes from. And then he might go on to tell you that the food from South Sumatra tends to be spicy, unlike, say, the food of the capital, Jakarta, in western Java, where it tends to be sweeter. And perhaps he'll point out that the potato and beef patty that you're meant to dip in a special chicken soup called soto ayam ?with rice vermicelli and shreds of chewy, batter-fried chicken breast?is called a perkedel, and emerged from the centuries when Dutch colonists occupied the islands. Or that the delicate, crisp crepe pockets called martabak that are filled with egg, ground beef, and onion?and their little accompanying salad of sweet pickled cucumbers?are of Arabic origin, via India.

They don't put lemon in SariWangi tea in Indonesia, but say the word and you can have it.

This sort of intel isn't at all intrusive; frequently it's illuminating. Chicago hasn't had much opportunity to explore this vastly varied and underrepresented cuisine since the short-lived Angin Mamiri closed (though caterers the Rice Table are still around). Setiawan, who used to run a restaurant in Boston with Elice, is joined by his son Oscar in the front of the house, where intricately carved wooden birdcages, parasols, and puppets dangle from the ceilings, and fearsome masks and wood carvings adorn the walls, an environment created by the designer Suhail, whose work you might remember from the late Tizi Melloul, Del Toro, or DeLaCosta.

Elice is in the kitchen with their other son, Emil, preparing the dishes, the majority of which are particular examples of regional street food spanning the archipelago. That means familiar portable things like peanut-sauce-drenched tempeh or chicken satay, along with soy-marinated beef and pork, the latter of which is uncommon among Indonesia's Muslim majority but not on the Hindu island of Bali.

It also means deep-fried snacks, like springy fish cake balls bound with tapioca flour or shattery battered chicken wings studded with crispy garlic and shellacked with a sweet chile-ginger glaze.

More ample dishes, such as chicken curry or beef rendang, illustrate the indispensability of rice all over the islands. The latter is a super-slow-cooked, currylike stew in which the liquid is simmered off until the meat darkens, absorbs the spices, and sizzles in the pan. You can sample either with plain rice or, in an order of nasi lemak, with a perfect cone of coconut-milk-saturated rice that's surrounded by an array of contrasting items: pickled carrot, shredded omelet, fried anchovy, shrimp crackers, peanuts, and spicy sambal. The idea is to customize each bite with fork and knife, not unlike the way one would with Thai shrimp-paste rice.

The everyday menu is tightly focused, and it may not take you long to notice repetitive elements?egg noodle, shrimp crackers, fried stuff. As diverse as Indonesian food is, there are three dishes blanketed by thick peanut or cashew sauce. One such dish, the gado gado, is a smothered-and-covered, hot-and-cold salad of boiled eggs, steamed vegetables, and shrimp chips that might be the most internationally familiar Indonesian dish after satay. And there are three dishes similar to the pempek telor based on springy dumplings formed from minced fish and tapioca starch. One of them, the batagor, is composed of crispy fried dumplings of minced fish and shrimp bound to pillowy chunks of tofu, which are slathered in thick peanut sauce. They're delicious, but heavy and rich, and if you make the mistake of ordering them with the gado gado you might start to feel you've developed a nut allergy.

There's a weekly rotating list of three "Mommy specials" that diversify things a bit. One week it may be the aforementioned soto ayam, and the next a meatball soup, brimming with crispy fried-beef-stuffed wontons and tofu, or deep-fried empanadas stuffed with chicken, boiled eggs, and vermicelli, or a heaping mound of spicy mie goreng: egg noodles stir-fried with finely minced beef balls, chicken, and egg.

For dessert there's a pair of refreshing icy sweets, including a pink rose-syrup slush layered with soft young coconut, jackfruit, and cassava noodles.

Rickshaw Republic is one of the more unique and special places in town, and not just for the singularity of the food. Sure, the Setiawan family have cornered the near-nonexistent market on Indonesian food in Chicago, but they're such earnest ambassadors for it that even if you're a first-timer, you should be evangelizing its virtues after you leave.
