Iraq removes central bank head in corruption probe

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq abruptly removed the longtime governor of the country's central bank Tuesday after he and other bank officials were targeted in an investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing.

The governor, Sinan al-Shabibi, is seen as a politically independent economist who has led the bank since shortly after the U.S.-led invasion. He has not been charged with any crime, and his lawyer insists he is innocent.

The allegations, drawn up by a special parliamentary committee established to investigate the bank, could give new ammunition to critics of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that the Iraqi leader is trying to consolidate control over the country's institutions.

Iraq's Cabinet voted Tuesday to temporarily replace al-Shabibi with Abdul-Basit Turki, the head of the Board of Supreme Audit, until the investigation is complete, according to Ali al-Moussawi, a spokesman for the prime minister.

Iraq's Integrity Commission, the country's anti-corruption watchdog, is investigating the allegations.

"The committee in charge of this ... found shortcomings in the work of the central bank and these findings were sent to the Integrity Commission, which has decided to withdraw power from al-Shabibi," al-Moussawi said.

The investigation deals at least in part with alleged irregularities involving the exchange of Iraqi dinars for hard currency, according to al-Moussawi and Haitham al-Jabouri, a lawmaker involved in the probe.

About 16 bank employees are targeted in the investigation, al-Jabouri said. He said he expects arrest warrants against some could be issued soon.

Before becoming bank governor in 2003, al-Shabibi worked for more than two decades for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

One of his lawyers, Waleed Mohammed al-Shabibi, defended the governor's innocence. The lawyer described himself as a relative of the governor.

"These charges are politically motivated. Al-Shabibi is honest and professional," said the lawyer. "The government is planning to replace him with another official who takes orders from the government."

Al-Moussawi, the prime minister's spokesman, denied the charge, saying there was no political motivation behind the move.

The bank governor himself could not immediately be reached for comment. His lawyer said al-Shabibi is out of the country. He declined to say where.

Spokespeople for the central bank said they are not authorized to discuss the allegations.

Iraq has rapidly increased its oil output following years of war and neglect, and that has translated into a sharp rise in hard currency reserves. The country earlier this year surpassed next-door Iran as OPEC's second-largest oil producer, and its currency reserves recently topped $60 billion.

But the bank's efforts to keep the dinar stable through its sales of dollars to local banks have come under pressure, particularly over the past year.

Mudhhir Mohammed Salih, the bank's deputy governor, said in January that he believed the civil war in neighboring Syria and international sanctions against Iran had caused a jump in demand for dollars sold by Baghdad.

He said opportunistic businessmen were buying up dollars and then reselling them on the black market to customers across the border, sucking greenbacks out of the country and making it harder for the bank to keep Iraq's dinar stable. The bank aims to keep the local currency set at close to 1,200 dinars per dollar.

Salih separately confirmed he is among those being investigated, but said he has no further details.

To tie in with IFI Educations schools screening of?We are Poets?(http://wearepoets.co.uk?), Poetry Ireland in?collaboration with the IFI are offering a number of?FREE WORKSHOPS?to 12 lucky participants, between the ages of 15 and 18, who are interested in learning the art of slam poetry.

These high-energy slam poetry workshops will be led by award-winning poet and spoken word performer, Dave Lordan. The participants will learn about performance, writing and the art of slam poetry, and work towards a live performance which will take place on Dec 12^th?after the screening?We are Poets.

?Our inaugural Creative Writing Workshop for Teenage Writers, which was??designed and led?by Dave Lordan, was one of the great successes of this year?s West Cork Literary Festival. It sold out very quickly, and participants travelled from all around the country to take part. Parents expressed their appreciation that a workshop aimed specifically at creative teenagers was available. In this course, Dave concentrated on the participants? creativity, without limiting it to writing, which allowed them to develop a very broad spectrum of artistic skills. One young man, for example, was invited by renowned author Dava Sobel to perform a section of her play during her own headline event. A young woman, who had insisted on the first day that she would?never?do a public reading, nonetheless read her extraordinary piece about the Christchurch earthquake on the following Friday. Several of the group, with Dave?s guidance, volunteered to take part in our Amnesty International Writers at Risk campaign, which involved reading to huge audiences, in front of world-class authors. Dave?s work on this involved helping the group to write and edit their pieces, coaching them in public speaking, and giving moral support at the event.? Having young people involved, like this, in many aspects of our programme was an asset to the festival ? and would not have been possible without Dave. His dedication to his group was extraordinary. He made himself available to them around the clock, which in fact made it possible for the WCLF to hold this workshop in the first place. The group produced brilliant work in the classroom sessions and their performances at a special reading on the final day were also a testament to Dave?s hard work. Several parents spoke to me in moving terms about what this very special week in Bantry had meant to their children, and so to them, and this is entirely due to Dave?s talent, dedication, and sensitivity. I very much enjoyed working with him, and look forward to repeating the workshop again next year ? with Dave at the helm.??

Age should not close the door to surgery, warns royal college

Decisions on whether older people are put forward for surgery must not be based on out-dated assumptions of age and fitness, a report warns.

The report by?the Royal College of Surgeons and Age UK says a person?s overall health - or ?biological age? - must be the main consideration. It shows that whilst a? patient?s health needs - including conditions that could be treated by surgery - increases with age, elective surgery rates decline steadily for people as they grow older. Thus the gap between the increasing health need and access to surgery means many older people are missing out on potentially life-saving treatment.

The study, Access all Ages: Assessing the impact of age on access to surgical treatment, examines the patterns of surgical treatment in relation to age across eight areas of surgery. It?looks at? the potential causes of these trends and makes recommendations as to how the NHS can ensure that all patients can access the best possible surgical treatment, irrespective of their age.

It highlights that communication with patients to discuss risks and benefits, and the effective working of multi-disciplinary teams to bring together several specialists, including geriatricians, is essential in a joint decision-making process.

The study also warns that the ?20bn NHS efficiency drive heightens the danger of older people being disproportionately impacted, as restrictions may be imposed because of the perceived reduction in the cost effectiveness of providing treatment when relative life expectancy is shorter. It highlights that? a new ban on age discrimination in the NHS came into effect at the beginning of this month, providing? a legal framework to go alongside moral and professional imperatives to ensure that older patients receive the most appropriate treatment for their individual needs whatever their date of birth.

The way the NHS has approached the care of older people has failed to keep up with the major advances in medical and social care which have resulted in people living longer healthier lives, it says.

Other key findings include:

- The incidence of breast cancer peaks in the 85+ age group, while the surgery rate peaks for patients in their mid-60s and then declines sharply from the age of 70.

- People over the age of 65 make up the majority of recipients of joint replacement surgery. However, the rate of elective knee replacement and hip replacement surgery for patients in their late 70s and over has dropped sharply and consistently over the three years examined.

- Ten thousand men a year die from prostate cancer and the incidence of the disease increases with age. Overall, half of men who develop the disease will die as a direct result of it. Again, surgical treatment rates for the disease do not match the number of new cases being diagnosed amongst the older population.

- Emergency surgical procedures are increasing for hernias in older people, while the planned surgery rates plummet once a patient passes the 75-79 bracket.

The study is an important step towards understanding the variations in surgical care that exist according to age, as well as the explanations for them.

Professor Norman Williams, president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: ?This isn?t about surgeons slamming the theatre door on older people. In fact it is alarming to think that the treatment a patient receives may be influenced by their age. There are multiple factors that affect treatment decisions and often valid explanations as to why older people either opt out of surgery - or are recommended non-surgical treatment alternatives. The key is that it is a decision based on the patient rather than how old they are that matters.?

The report outlines that not everyone will benefit from surgery and there are legitimate reasons why older people may decide with their clinician not to go ahead with a procedure.

However, there can be barriers to seeing a surgeon. For example, some symptoms can be dismissed as an inevitable part of ageing rather than a potential sign of ill health. This can mean that a disease is at a more advanced stage by the time they are diagnosed; ruling out surgical treatment.

Michelle Mitchell of Age UK said ?When it comes to peoples? health, their date of birth actually tells you very little. A healthy living 80-year-old could literally run rings round someone many years younger who does not share the same good health. Yet in the past, too many medical decisions we believe have been made on age alone with informal cut-offs imposed so that people over a certain age were denied treatment.

?This report shows the large gap between the number of people living with a condition or health need and the surgery rates to treat older people. We would like surgeons and other health professionals to read this report carefully and examine what they can do to ensure that age discrimination is eradicated from the NHS, as legislation now demands.?

The report recommends that all those with an interest in improving health outcomes must work together to safely optimise surgery rates for older people. It urges clinicians to inform patients if surgery has been ruled out for a condition where it would normally be considered and provide reasons.

Here we need to discuss relationships between characters. Now, some of the people in the roleplay have already discussed this with me. I know that De'laire has a special grudge towards the hearts kingdom and plans on taking it over again. During the course of events, this will either lead to him trying to eliminate or kidnap/use Ruby Heart to take back over that kingdom, it depends also on what happens. That's something I came up with a year ago with a friend who created De'laire.

The relationships between advisers and royals must be address as well and discussed, and if royals want to alliance with someone specific, then they need to post it. Ruby ends up making an alliance with Marcus in the story, towards the beginning and they have a close connection.

What you hear could depend on what your hands are doing

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? New research links motor skills and perception, specifically as it relates to a second finding -- a new understanding of what the left and right brain hemispheres "hear." Georgetown University Medical Center researchers say these findings may eventually point to strategies to help stroke patients recover their language abilities, and to improve speech recognition in children with dyslexia.

The study, presented at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, is the first to match human behavior with left brain/right brain auditory processing tasks. Before this research, neuroimaging tests had hinted at differences in such processing.

"Language is processed mainly in the left hemisphere, and some have suggested that this is because the left hemisphere specializes in analyzing very rapidly changing sounds," says the study's senior investigator, Peter E. Turkeltaub, M.D., Ph.D., a neurologist in the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery. This newly created center is a joint program of Georgetown University and MedStar National Rehabilitation Network.

Turkeltaub and his team hid rapidly and slowly changing sounds in background noise and asked 24 volunteers to simply indicate whether they heard the sounds by pressing a button.

"We asked the subjects to respond to sounds hidden in background noise," Turkeltaub explained. "Each subject was told to use their right hand to respond during the first 20 sounds, then their left hand for the next 20 second, then right, then left, and so on." He says when a subject was using their right hand, they heard the rapidly changing sounds more often than when they used their left hand, and vice versa for the slowly changing sounds.

"Since the left hemisphere controls the right hand and vice versa, these results demonstrate that the two hemispheres specialize in different kinds of sounds -- the left hemisphere likes rapidly changing sounds, such as consonants, and the right hemisphere likes slowly changing sounds, such as syllables or intonation," Turkeltaub explains. "These results also demonstrate the interaction between motor systems and perception. It's really pretty amazing. Imagine you're waving an American flag while listening to one of the presidential candidates. The speech will actually sound slightly different to you depending on whether the flag is in your left hand or your right hand."

Ultimately, Turkeltaub hopes that understanding the basic organization of auditory systems and how they interact with motor systems will help explain why language resides in the left hemisphere of the brain, and will lead to new treatments for language disorders, like aphasia (language difficulties after stroke or brain injury) or dyslexia.

"If we can understand the basic brain organization for audition, this might ultimately lead to new treatments for people who have speech recognition problems due to stroke or other brain injury. Understanding better the specific roles of the two hemispheres in auditory processing will be a big step in that direction. If we find that people with aphasia, who typically have injuries to the left hemisphere, have difficulty recognizing speech because of problems with low-level auditory perception of rapidly changing sounds, maybe training the specific auditory processing deficits will improve their ability to recognize speech," Turkeltaub concludes.

Inflation slows in China

Prices in China were up 1.9% in September compared to the previous year.

HONG KONG (CNNMoney) -- Chinese consumers paid 1.9% more for goods in September than they did a year ago, the government's National Bureau of Statistics reported Monday. That's down from a 2% increase in August.

Food prices, which account for more than a third of the inflation calculation, rose 2.5% during the month.

Household finances in China are especially susceptible to fluctuations in food prices, as many poor families spend large percentages of their income on food.

Still, inflation remains at very low levels. As recently as one year ago, China's consumer price index stood above 6% -- well north of the government's stated inflation rate target of 4%.

In July, officials said that annual economic growth dropped to 7.6% in the second quarter -- down from 8.1% the previous quarter. The government will issue its third quarter GDP report later this week, and economists expect growth to remain well below 8%.

Some analysts have recently lowered their growth forecasts for the rest of the year, while some noted that weakness is likely to extend into 2013.

The People's Bank of China twice lowered interest rates this year in an effort to spur growth, and the central bank has also cut the amount of money banks are required to hold in reserves.

The government confirmed more action last month, finalizing the details on a $157.7 billion investment in 55 new infrastructure products.

China's once-in-a-decade leadership transition is scheduled to start Nov. 8. The timing of the event, which will reshape the ranks of China's Communist Party, could put any policy changes on hold.

Economists at UBS said Monday that further action is unlikely after a round of positive trade data that has eased concerns.

"We do not expect the government to come up with any major new stimulus, either during the leadership transition or after, unless the economy takes a turn for the much worse," the bank said in a research note.

East Coast hikers missing in Glacier National Park

KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) ? Rescue teams at Glacier National Park searched in wintery conditions and rugged terrain Sunday for two East Coast hikers reported missing by family members.

Park officials said 50 searchers were looking for 32-year-old Neal Peckens of Virginia and 32-year-old Jason Hiser of Maryland. Hometowns weren't available.

Weather was the biggest challenge facing searchers, who have found 18 inches of snow on the trail at higher elevations and five-foot drifts in some areas, spokeswoman Denise Germann said.

"The area they are working in is very steep and exposed," she said. "It's right along the Continental Divide, and it's very windy."

More rain and possibly snow in higher areas was expected on Sunday, she said. A helicopter dropped off some searchers inside the park early Sunday but Germann said low clouds moved in, preventing aerial searches.

The two were reported missing Friday after failing to catch a flight home from Montana. Their vehicle was found late Friday, and the search started Saturday.

Germann said it's not clear if they were prepared for cold weather, or if they have much experience in the backcountry. Searchers believe the two were hiking and not mountain climbing.

"We believe they are still in the park," she said. "We don't know what clothing or gear they've got."

Officials believe the two started hiking from the North Shore Trailhead at Two Medicine on the east side of the park on Tuesday and planned to return to Two Medicine on Wednesday, and then do some day hikes Thursday.

She said park rangers along with Flathead County Search and Rescue members were taking part in the search. She said some are on foot, some on horses and some searching with dogs.

The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies with a 50 percent chance of rain on Sunday with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, dropping to the upper 30s or low 40s overnight. Winds are from the southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Analysis: China perma-bears scent downbeat economic data ahead

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is set to deliver a rare treat to the perma-bears who growl constantly that the growth model that brought three decades of double-digit economic expansion is now broken - data showing that GDP fell below target between June and September.

The first miss since the first quarter of 2009, when the global financial crisis raged, has become the consensus forecast of economists, who expect official data due on Thursday to confirm that growth slowed to 7.4 percent year-on-year in Q3.

That would undershoot the 7.5 percent rate mandated by Beijing for 2012.

There's a risk it is even worse given stuttering steel output, tepid power consumption, sagging exports and steady downward revisions to corporate profit forecasts that have investors in the Shanghai stock market <.ssec> set for a third straight year of losses - potentially the worst run in 20 years.

"In reality, GDP growth is probably 6 percent already," MES Advisers' Paul Markowski, a long-time consultant to China's financial authorities, told Reuters.

"China has a trade problem, a consumption issue and a leverage catastrophe waiting to happen," added Markowski, whose sub-consensus view is far from the most bearish.

The trade difficulty is clearest to see in an economy where exports generated 31 percent of GDP in 2011, according to World Bank data, and support an estimated 200 million jobs.

Data released at the weekend showed total trade in the first nine months of 2012 was up 6.2 percent on a year ago, well short of the official 10 percent target, as the debt crisis in Europe - China's biggest export market - persists.

VICIOUS DESTOCKING CYCLE

Although September exports were better than expected, officials say the trade outlook remains grim. A central bank adviser said two weeks ago that China had badly underestimated the scale of the global economic slowdown.

The uncertainty for exports has created a vicious cycle of destocking at companies, revealed in falling inventory levels according to surveys of purchasing managers.

That in turn drags on industrial output, dampens factory gate prices, squeezes margins, dents profits, makes banks wary about lending and destroys investor confidence.

Some analysts cite steel output - up a tiny 2.3 percent in the first eight months of this year compared with the same period a year ago - and electricity usage growth running at roughly half the average rate of the last five years as manifest signs of economic malaise.

Carl Weinberg, China-watching chief economist at High Frequency Economics in New York, says they are red herrings, arguing that even flat output of both are consistent with GDP growth of around 8 percent in 2012.

"If you produced enough steel last year to build 1,000 bridges, that same amount of steel can build another 1,000 bridges this year. If building 1,000 bridges boosted GDP by X percent last year, it will do almost the same this year," he wrote in a note to clients.

The question, retort the China bears, is whether they are bridges to nowhere.

SUPPLY SIDE POTENTIAL

Stephen King, global chief economist at HSBC, reckons the skeptics need more robust evidence than heavy infrastructure spending to conclude that an economic landing so hard that growth dynamics will shatter is in store for China.

"People have been prepared to write off China for the last 30 years," King said. "They've not been so good at explaining why it hasn't happened."

Opening up to foreign investors, a global revolution in technology that has lowered barriers to entry for various industries and low per capita incomes have all helped drive growth, and that supply side potential remains great, King says.

"For a whole host of reasons, China could afford to make some poor choices about capital allocation and still do incredibly well," he added.

That's little comfort though to firms and funds that have invested assuming expansion of more than 9 percent, only to see it tumble towards 7 percent in a matter of months.

The weakest forecast in the last Reuters China GDP poll a month ago was for growth of 7.1 percent for Q3, with the overall consensus for a seventh successive quarter of slowing growth to leave the economy on track for its most sluggish year of expansion since 1999.

Equity investors have arguably discounted worse than that, with a 15 percent peak-to-trough fall this year for the Shanghai Composite index <.ssec>.

STRUCTURAL SHIFT

Andrew Batson, who heads coverage of China's economy at research firm GK Dragonomics, reckons getting hung up on a specific number is to mis-read the underlying significance of the structural shift that is happening in the economy.

"There's a long-standing tradition in China, that no-one really knows the source of, that says 8 percent is the growth number below which there will be unimaginable social consequences," he said.

"I'm not sure there was ever any evidence that this theory was true. We're below 8 percent now and Chinese society is not collapsing, so I'm pretty sure it's not true."

Many economists believe China's annual growth by the end of this decade will be nearer 5 percent than the roughly 10 percent achieved since Deng Xiaoping launched market reforms in 1978. They say 6-7 percent is more likely - and more sustainable.

Beijing's five-year plan that runs to 2015 officially targets GDP growth of just 7 percent over the period.

The government says slower expansion makes it easier to rebalance the economy towards more stable domestic consumption without igniting inflation and other social perils the ruling Communist Party fear could loosen its grip on power.

Cutting the amount of investment in the economy as a share of GDP - currently above 45 percent and up 10 percentage points in a decade - is key to that rebalancing effort.

Batson's latest report reckons the shift will make aggregate demand growth more volatile and so raise the risk that growth could miss target more often - music to the ears of the bears.

"If companies were planning on 10 percent GDP growth and they are only going to get 7 percent, then they may need to invest less, or differently. That's kind of a shock to the system and people are going to have to rethink the future."

Taking his comeback to a level nobody could have predicted, Johnson scored both goals in the States? 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda, his 91st header salvaging an otherwise worrisome performance from the United States Men?s National Team.

The U.S. had led for only six minutes ? the time between Johnson?s opener and Dexter Blackstock?s 26th minute response. From then on, it was the same, attack-challenged U.S. we?ve come to know under Jurgen Klinsmann.

There was possession but no urgency; intent but no execution; talent but no production.

Had Johnson not redirected home Alan Gordon?s late cross, the U.S. would be in crisis mode. That Klinsmann?s two surprise recalls created the winner is their boss?s only saving grace. His team was lacked urgency, was curiously deployed, and showed no progress from their last disappointing road trip to Kingston.

Few teams in CONCACAF would have lost to the U.S. tonight. Klinsmann is lucky his team was facing one of them.

Here are some quick takeaways:

1. Where was the urgency? - This wasn?t a true must win, but as the coach said mid-week, the team was treating it as such. Still, if this team was treating this as a all-or-nothing scenario, the U.S. is going to have difficulty making it through The Hex (the next round of CONCACAF qualifying).

With the exception of some fire from Michael Bradley when he was taken down from behind late (a play that should have given the U.S. a penalty kick), the team approached this one with the same, business-like approach we?ve seen throughout the tournament. They could have used a lot more passion tonight.

2. U.S. is still not executing in the final third ?

3. ? and Jurgen Klinsmann bears much of the blame.

It will be interesting to hear Klinsmann?s explanations as to why Johnson spent most of this match wide left. The States generated three good chances for him on crosses, but all too often the Sounders? No. 9 was seen deep in midfield, tracking back like a traditional midfielder, even if he played like a forward most of the time.

Beyond Johnson?s deployment, the U.S. still doesn?t seem to know what to do with all their possession. We?re seeing very few balls played behind the defense, and those that are tend to be poorly weighted into marginally dangerous spots. We?re not seeing effective runs in the box. We?re not seeing the type of movement and interchanging that opens up space. Aside from a few nice layoffs from Clint Dempsey, we?re not seeing the type of one-touch passing that can navigate compact defenses.

Some of that is personnel. Some of that is performance. Some of that is training, and some of it is tactical.

There are a number of places where solutions could lie, but after another performance where the play far outstretched the goals, the team needs answers.

4. The central defense remains a work in progress ? Both Geoff Cameron and Clarence Goodson were beaten for Antigua and Barbuda?s goal. Cameron allowed his man, Peter Byers, to blow by him, while Goodson slipped getting across the six to mark Blackstock. Twice late, players were able to turn on shots inside the U.S. penalty area, leaving Tim Howard lunging to protect his far post. As Antigua and Barbuda were breaking out into counters late in the match, you couldn?t help but wonder what a World Cup-caliber team would have done to this defense.

Perhaps things would have been different if Fabian Johnson were healthy, allowing Carlos Bocanegra to play in the middle. We should find out on Tuesday.

5. Heroic Eddie Johnson ? As the seconds ticked away on a game that looked destined to end in a draw, the U.S. desperately needed a hero. Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, perhaps Carlos Bocanegra? One of the core needed to assert himself.

Instead, it was Johnson. Controversial callup, having seen you in two years, ?you?re not Jozy? Eddie Johnson.

Pealing off his man in the 91st minute into space toward the far post, Johnson subtly volunteered to be that hero. Just as he?d done on the opener, he hammered his header down and across goal, giving goalkeeper Molvin James little chance to preserve a historic result.

One year ago, Johnson was a non-factor for the U.S. After failing to land a place with a club in Mexico, it wasn?t even clear he had a professional future. When he landed in Seattle, he had to start over: New team; new city; no prestige. Everything that got Eddie Johnson to this point has happen in the last seven months.

Now (and all of a sudden), he?s the team?s best goal scoring threat, the man who represents the U.S.?s potential to be a truly dangerous team ?

And the one good thing to come out of the States? trip to Antigua.

Mom who glued toddler's hands gets 99 years

DALLAS -- Elizabeth Escalona, the 23-year-old mother of five who admitted to gluing her daughter?s hands to the wall and beating her as potty training punishment, was sentenced Friday to 99 years.

In announcing the sentence, state District Judge Larry Mitchell said Escalona "savagely beat" her child and deserved to be punished.

During closing arguments earlier Friday, prosecutor Eren Price told the court to give Escalona's children peace by knowing she would never come walking through their door in the future.

The prosecution showed photos of the apartment where Jocelyn Cedillo was glued to the wall, saying "We have to imagine what it was like."

Defense attorneys said Escalona needs anger management and treatment. They painted her life as a miserable one of abuse and drugs.

Escalona faced from probation to life in prison, and prosecutors had sought 45 years behind bars.

While on the stand Thursday, Escalona sobbed as a prosecutor ordered her to look at the injuries she inflicted on her daughter's body.

She cried and didn't speak for several seconds after prosecutor Eren Price displayed a photo of then-2-year-old Jocelyn during Escalona's sentencing hearing. Dozens of red and brown marks from the September 2011 beating covered Jocelyn's back.

"Ms. Escalona, if you can do it, you can look at it," Price said in a loud, sharp voice.

Escalona, who pleaded guilty in July to felony injury of a child, was on the witness stand for a second day.

Police say Escalona kicked her daughter in the stomach, beat her with a milk jug, then stuck her hands to an apartment wall with an adhesive commonly known as Super Glue. Escalona's other children told authorities their mother attacked Jocelyn due to potty training problems.

Jocelyn suffered bleeding in her brain, a fractured rib, bruises and bite marks, and was in a coma for a couple of days. Some skin had been torn off her hands, where doctors also found paint chips from the apartment wall, witnesses testified.

Prosecutors have portrayed Escalona as an unfit mother with a history of violence, and Price has repeatedly referred to her as a "monster." Escalona has admitted she behaved like a monster when she beat Jocelyn, but insists she isn't one now.

Price asked Escalona what she thought should happen in the case. Escalona replied in a soft, halting voice: "I should be put away." Then, she added, "But I also think I should be given a second chance."

When Price asked her why, she responded: "Because I'm not a monster."

Escalona also testified that her children were a source of stress. "They didn't bother me, but I did (need) a little break," she said.

She described one of her sons misbehaving and getting into fights and another daughter once leaving home without her permission. Under questioning from defense attorney Angie N'Duka, Escalona said she was learning ways to deal with her anger and the stress of raising five children.

But Price said she still didn't understand what could have caused the attack on Jocelyn.

"Explain to us what about your stress is unique from what everybody else in this world lives through every single day," she said.

In her testimony, Escalona admitted she often doesn't tell the truth and had lied to doctors and others assigned to her case. But she resisted Price's repeated efforts to get her to admit she was a liar.

"I'm not a liar," Escalona said. "I have a hard time trusting people."

Escalona acknowledged several missteps in her childhood: hanging around with gang members and trying marijuana around the age of 11, assaulting her mother at 12 and getting pregnant with her first child at 14.

She also admitted drinking and doing drugs after she was released from jail on bond in February.

Despite what she described as problems paying rent and other bills, Escalona admitted she was using marijuana about twice a day in the time before she attacked Jocelyn.

Price said Escalona will be eligible for parole in 30 years. N'Duka said she plans to appeal.
