Officials tell news that a 2.5 magnitude Los Angeles earthquake began today in the early morning hours. The quake started just after 3:06 AM PST. The quake was shallow as well. USGS indicates to news that the quake started only six miles below ground level. As a result the quake could be felt across the region.

Also overnight, a quake struck Frazier Park. It was seven miles north of town. Officials tell news that it started twenty-four miles southwest of Arvin and twenty-six miles southwest of Lamont. Reps also tell news that the quake was thirty-three miles south of Bakersfield as well. No damage has been reported by local news.
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (Reuters) - A train derailed outside the ancient northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday, killing at least 60 people and injuring up to 131 in one of Europe's worst rail disasters.
Bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Firefighters clambered over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows, while ambulances and fire engines surrounded the scene.
The government said it was working on the hypothesis the derailment was an accident - although the scene will stir memories of 2004's Madrid train bombing, carried out by Islamist extremists, that killed 191 people. Sabotage or attack was unlikely to be involved, an official source said.
The train operated by state rail company Renfe with 247 people on board derailed on the eve of the city's main festival in honor of Saint James when thousands of Christian pilgrims from all over the world pack the streets.
"It was going so quickly. ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station.
"A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realized the train was burning. ... I was in the second wagon and there was fire. ... I saw corpses," he added.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, will visit the site on Thursday morning, his spokeswoman said.
"In the face of a tragedy such as just happened in Santiago de Compostela on the eve of its big day, I can only express my deepest sympathy as a Spaniard and a Galician," Rajoy said in a statement.
Santiago de Compostela's tourism board said all the festivities, including Wednesday's traditional High Mass at the centuries-old cathedral, were canceled as the city went into mourning.
'LIKELY AN ACCIDENT'
El Pais newspaper cited sources close to the investigation as saying the train was travelling at over twice the speed limit on a sharp curve. Both Renfe and state-owned Adif, which is in charge of the tracks, had opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment, Renfe said.
An official source said no statement would be made regarding the cause of the Spanish derailment until the black boxes of the train were examined, but said it was most likely an accident.
"We are moving away from the hypothesis of sabotage or attack," he said.
Clinics in the city were overwhelmed with people flocking to give blood, while hotels organized free rooms for relatives. Madrid sent forensic scientists and hospital staff to the region on special flights.
The death toll was 60 and could rise, with up to 131 injured, a Galicia-based spokeswoman for the office of the central government said.
"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," said the head of the surrounding Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, in a radio interview.
The eight-carriage train was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol on the Galician coast when it derailed, Renfe said in a statement.
The disaster happened as Spain is struggling to emerge from a long-running recession marked by government-driven austerity to bring its finances into order. Firefighters called off a strike to help with the disaster, while hospital staff, many operating on reduced salaries because of spending cuts, worked overtime to tend the injured.
The city's main festival focuses on St James, one of Jesus' 12 disciples whose remains are said to rest in the city and who is patron saint of Galicia.
The apostle's shrine there is the destination of the famous El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, followed by Christians since the Middle Ages.
The derailment happened less than two weeks after six people died when a train came off the tracks and hit the platform at a station in central France.
That accident may have been caused by a loose steel plate at a junction, French train operator SNCF said.
Wednesday's derailment was one of the worst rail accidents in Europe over the past 25 years.
In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.
In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.
In Spain itself, 41 people were killed the same year when an underground train derailed and overturned in a tunnel just before entering the Jesus metro station in Valencia.

Facebook has been working hard to convince advertisers about its reach on mobile phones.
The number of users accessing Facebook via their mobile phones in June jumped around 20 percent in the United States and Britain, Facebook said Wednesday, touting its appeal for brands trying to reach consumers during the summer months.
Created in a Harvard dorm room in 2004, the world's largest social network has moved to reposition its business for a world in which consumers' primarily access the Internet via small-screened smartphones rather than computers.
The strategy has started to pay off, with the group's results for the first three months of the year showing mobile advertising revenue gaining momentum and accounting for 30 percent of Facebook's overall ad revenue in the first quarter.
On Thursday, the group said its mobile monthly active users had increased by 18 percent in the United States and by 22 percent in Britain in June compared with the previous year, as brands seek different ways to reach consumers who are often on holiday and not interacting with their usual media.
"We see this as a fantastic opportunity with empirical evidence of people staying engaged on mobile phones and using Facebook," James Quarles, regional director for Britain and Southern Europe, said.
"As people are away and on holiday, it provides a different opportunity for brands to think differently about Facebook."
Though advertisers are keen to harness the boom in mobile phones, few have perfected the art of using mobile devices to target adverts to consumers, with a discrepancy remaining between the amount of time consumers spend on their mobile devices and the advertising dollars companies spend there.
Facebook is seen as one of the most likely ways for mobile advertising to succeed.
"When people are that engaged, checking their Facebook 14 times a day, if advertisers can deliver the right message to the right audience you can really see some business impact," Quarles said.

Boston, MA Computerized cognitive testing is increasingly playing a key role in therapy development for dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This week at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference, Keith Wesnes Ph.D., Practice Leader of Bracket and founder of the CDR System, discussed new data for novel therapies at two poster presentations at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference.
Poster Title: Cognitive evidence in Alzheimer's disease patients that compromised hippocampal neurogenesis is related both to APOE4 status and CSF Abeta42
This presentation provides the first behavioural data in Alzheimer's patients which associates genetic and biomarker activity to dysfunction in a major brain area involved both in memory and the production of new nerve cells (neurogenesis), This exciting finding obtained in collaboration with a group including Kaj Blennow, University of Gothenburg, found that patients with two APOE ?4 alleles (which confer a 10 to 30 fold increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease) showed a selective decline in a computerised cognitive test measure associated with activity in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Furthermore, in all patients studied, this test measure was more closely associated with the levels of the A?42 biomarker for the disease than a number of other memory measures associated with different hippocampal regions.
As interest in Alzheimer's research is shifting to begin treating the disease at its earliest stages, these findings identify a potential genetic and biomarker strategy for selecting individuals for early treatment with therapies which may promote hippocampal neurogenesis.

A second presentation provides the first data that performance on objective tests of attention and memory can be improved by memantine in two other major forms of dementia - Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy Bodies. The improvements detected were highly statistically reliable and of clinically relevant effect sizes; indicating that memantine can produce cognitive benefits in patients with these dementias which match those seen previously with anticholinesterases.
Both studies utilised the CDR System, an automated cognitive test system, making a strong case for benefits for the increased sensitivity and specificity that such procedures bring to dementia research, when compared with the traditional tests which have been historically employed.
Another recent Alzheimer's trial conducted by Orion Corporation demonstrated proof of concept of a new drug with a novel mode of action. The phase II clinical trial tested ORM-12741 -- the first drug to target a specific subtype of adrenergic receptors (alpha-2c) in the brain, which are believed to be involved in modulation of brain functions under stressful conditions. The trial of 100 patients showed significant positive effects on episodic memory in patients with moderate Alzheimer's disease. Efficacy was assessed using the CDR System.

From a more conservative perspective, though, the possibility that, as Salam puts it, ?the expansion of subsidized coverage might prompt other workers with less compelling personal stories to retire or reduce their work hours,? does suggest one of the more plausible right-of-center cases in favor of employer-provided health insurance: Namely, the fact that a link between subsidized health insurance and steady work fits with the general conservative preference for tying welfare spending to employment, family and personal responsibility. From this point of view, the tax code provision linking insurance to employment is of a piece with work requirements in welfare programs, or the way the earned-income tax credit tries to reward low-wage workers for actually sticking with a job, or the way the child tax credit is only available to parents who actually pay taxes, and so on down a longer list of policies that tend to find favor on the right of center.
As my prior philippics against employer-provided insurance suggest, I think this case ultimately fails. First, because the subsidy for employer-provided insurance, at least as currently designed, is not actually a work-based welfare program: It?s a work-based middle-class entitlement whose real economic impact is ultimately regressive. Second, because health insurance (and especially health insurance as conservatives would design it) is fundamentally different from other means-tested subsidies: It?s a hedge against catastrophe rather than a subsidy for daily life, which makes it most valuable in precisely the contexts where you might be least able to find or keep a job. Third, because employer-provided insurance creates work incentives with one hand but takes from workers with the other ??because it first masks the true price of insurance, driving up the cost of health care overall, and then as those costs eat up wage increases it makes paychecks seem stagnant even when compensation is technically increasing. And then finally, because all employers don?t offer insurance, so an employer-based system necessarily discriminates against many low-wage workers, who can?t take advantage of the subsidy through no fault of their own?? and the only way to rectify that problem is to create a universal employer mandate that would discourage business owners from hiring the very workers who most need both jobs and assistance.
But if the work disincentives created by a shift toward a subsidized individual market aren?t sufficient to rescue the case for employer-provided insurance, neither should they just be dismissed or ignored. Rather, they tend to buttress Ramesh Ponnuru?s argument that we should be slow-walking that shift rather than trying to make it happen all at once, the better to deal with unexpected consequences as they arrive. And they also tend to buttress the broader point that however we design our health insurance system, we need other policies that make the choice to work seem?more rewarding, attractive and sustainable for Americans on the bottom looking up.
