A new way of testing the safety of natural and synthetic chemicals has been developed by scientists with funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Their research, published today in the journal Ecotoxicology, could reduce the number of fish needed to test the toxicity of a range of chemicals including pharmaceuticals and environmental pollutants.

The researchers, led by Professor Awadhesh Jha of Plymouth University, have managed to coax cells from the liver of a rainbow trout to form a ball-shaped structure called a spheroid in a petri dish. This ball of cells behaves much more like normal animal tissue than cells grown in traditional ways in the lab and so can give researchers a more accurate picture of how an animal's body would respond to a chemical in the environment.

Fish are used to test whether both new and existing chemicals like pharmaceuticals can damage wildlife or the environment. Because a large number of spheroids can be produced from a single fish the use of this technique could mean less fish are needed to do these tests.

Professor Jha explains "This is a real breakthrough in our efforts to reduce the numbers of fish needed for toxicology testing. It is very important for the health of people, wildlife and whole ecosystems that we understand the effect of chemicals, both natural and manmade, in the environment, but we must strive to avoid the use of animals wherever possible."

One of the most impressive aspects of the fish spheroids is that they can be maintained in the lab for over a month. Many environmental pollutants cause health problems because they accumulate over time and become more concentrated further up the food chain. Because the fish spheroids can be maintained for longer time periods than normal cell cultures scientists can test the effect of long-term exposure to a potential toxin.

The fish spheroids were produced by a BBSRC-funded CASE student, Matthew Baron, who is being supervised by Professor Jha and his colleagues at Plymouth and AstraZeneca Safety Health and Environment. At present, scientists can use flat layers of fish cells to replace some live animal tests but these break down quickly and do not behave like real tissues. Spheroids are already well established models for testing on mammalian cells but this is the first time that they have been developed from fish cells.

Because the liver filters blood it is often the main organ where potential environmental toxins accumulate and are broken down by the body and so is the most important organ for testing toxicity. The researchers also hope to produce spheroids from fish gill cells, as the gills are another important site of toxin accumulation. By combining these two types of spheroids in a single system the researchers hope to develop a 'virtual fish' which could give a clear picture of how a particular chemical would affect a live animal.

Professor Douglas Kell, BBSRC Chief Executive said "Everyone wants to see fewer animals used in testing so this is great news. The UK has always led the way in efforts to reduce, refine and replace the use of animals in research. Whilst the use of some animals will remain important to ensuring that the medicines and other chemicals are safe to use and won't damage the environment, we are making great strides in the combining of new laboratory techniques and computer modelling to avoid using animals wherever possible."

Tips On Where To Find Wii Games Download Today | Video Gaming ...

Home / Computers / Tips On Where To Find Wii Games Download Today

Since the release of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii, the world of video gaming has never been the same. Kids, teenagers, and even adults are hooked to the growing fascination of such game consoles, and the addictive games that they each have to offer. Whether it?s finishing a mission, conquering a level, or completing a scenario, gamers just can?t seem to get enough of them. Among the most enticing feature that these new generation of game consoles have is the ability to connect online and allow users to find Wii games download, as well as games for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Gamers will never have to leave their seats to buy a single game ever again. This is quite an amazing feat, considering what the nineties game consoles, like the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis, were only capable of.

Downloadable game content, or DLC, is among the main features of video game consoles nowadays, which was originally initiated by Microsoft?s Xbox and Sega?s Dreamcast as an experimental concept. But in the recent years, DLC has become rather common in many video games. Many of the video game developers have taken advantage of this feature to extend the lifespan of a game franchise, especially the bestselling titles. A good video game does not have to end in a game disc, now you can download bonus stages, expansion packs, and other extra game materials.

The Xbox Live, the Wii Shop channel, and PlayStation 3?s Network are what gamers can use to download game content for their existing game title. Although most downloadable content have charges, there are game extras that can be downloaded for free. With the growing demand for DLC, the number of gamers who want to learn how to download Wii games as well as games for the other two consoles, have also significantly increased.

However, as with everything else, there are advantages and disadvantages when talking about downloadable content, or DLC. Prior to the existence of DLC, games stored in discs typically end up in shelves or disc holders once the gamer completes the game several times. But having the ability to download game materials like additional missions or levels, new characters, extra episodes, as well as other in-game ad-ons, through Wii games download or Xbox Live, can extend the fun factor and lifespan of the game.

When it comes to the quality of the additional content, there are some downloadable game extras that are actually worth their price. This is actually quite a relief, since some of the extra content can be quite costly. There are, however, free downloadable game contents that the gamer can enjoy, but some of them are just not worth downloading at all, especially since some services, like the Xbox Live, will charge you just for subscribing. Some developers even hold back several game components from its initial release, just so they can charge extra for the DLC. By the time you figure it all out, you have already spent more than a hundred bucks on a single game title alone.

Ultimately, downloading extra game content is an option that you have to make for your own. Learning how to download Wii games, Xbox 360 games, or PlayStation 3 games is also up to you. If you are an occasional gamer and not really the hardcore type, then why bother? Just enjoy the games that you already have. Why spend all that money when you can only spare a few minutes playing with your video games?

(AP) ? House Republicans won a historic political fight to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, but the GOP probably is still a long way from obtaining documents it wants in an investigation of a bungled Justice Department gun-tracking operation.

There are two routes to enforcing the contempt citations approved by the House on Thursday, a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit, although the White House on Friday virtually shut down the criminal path. The civil route through the courts would not be resolved anytime soon.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Justice Department going back to the administration of President Ronald Reagan has not pursued prosecutions in contempt cases involving assertions of executive privilege.

President Barack Obama invoked a broad form of the privilege to prevent sending department documents to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., is leading the effort to get the material related to Operation Fast and Furious.

"This is pure politics," Carney said.

"Remarkably the chairman of the committee involved here has asserted that he has no evidence that the attorney general knew of Operation Fast and Furious or did anything but take the right action when he learned of it.

"No evidence, so if you have no evidence as he has stated now about the White House and the attorney general, what else could this be but politics?"

More than 100 Democrats walked out of the House chamber to boycott the first of two contempt votes, saying Republicans were more interested in shameful election-year politics than documents.

Republicans demanded the documents for an ongoing investigation, but their arguments focused more on the need for closure for the family of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Two guns from the gun-tracking operation were found near his body after a shootout in Arizona.

Democrats promised closure as well, but said a less-partisan Republican investigation was the only way to get it.

Adding to the emotion of the day, the family of the slain agent issued a statement backing the Republicans.

"The Terry family takes no pleasure in the contempt vote against Attorney General Eric Holder. Such a vote should not have been necessary. The Justice Department should have released the documents related to Fast and Furious months ago," the statement said.

It all happened on the day that President Barack Obama's health care law survived in the Supreme Court, prompting some Democrats to speculate that the votes were scheduled to be overwhelmed by news stories about the ruling.

About five hours after the court ruled, with news sites flooded with information about the health care ruling, the House voted 255-67 to declare Holder in criminal contempt.

The matter goes to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who works under Holder.

A second vote of 258-95 held Holder in civil contempt and authorized the House to file a lawsuit.

In past cases, courts have been reluctant to settle disputes between the executive and legislative branches of government.

The issue became more complicated when Obama invoked a broad form of executive privilege, a legal position that is designed to keep private certain communications of executive branch agencies.

Issa's committee will consult with the House counsel's office about a court challenge to the administration's decision not to cooperate, spokesman Frederick Hill said.

The documents were written after Fast and Furious was shut down. The subpoena covered a 10-month period from February 2011, when the Justice Department denied that guns purchased in the U.S. were allowed to "walk" across the border into Mexico, to early December 2011 when the department acknowledged the earlier assertion was in error.

Republicans said the contempt citations were necessary because Holder refused to hand over documents that could explain why the Obama administration took 10 months to come clean about gun-walking. The operation identified more than 2,000 illicitly purchased weapons. Some 1,400 of them have yet to be recovered in the failed strategy to track the weapons to gun-running rings.

Inspiring Maker: The Gift of Struggle | Just Out Portland Oregon's ...

By Aaron Spencer

The risqu? subject of the documentary might have pushed the voting tallies over the top. The film was about the revival of burlesque, which has plenty of sex appeal and is a fairly popular pastime in the Pacific Northwest. The film is good in its own right, and it?s narrated by Margaret Cho, which gives it some star appeal.

But Courtney Hermann probably could have made a film about grass growing and won. Hermann is an acclaimed Portland documentarian and professor at the Art Institute of Portland. She was voted one of Hand-Eye Supply?s Most Inspiring Makers, an honor given to Portlanders who make things. She rode atop the supply store?s dazzling float in the Starlight Parade last month.

Hermann is deserving of the seat: her films have won audience awards at several film festivals and have appeared on PBS, among other prestigious outlets. But she humbly credits her many current and former students in town for the Maker title.

?I?d like to say I got votes because of the project alone, but I think it was students,? she says (we might find out next year if the work content actually matters in voting ? Hermann?s next film is about uranium mining).

Hermann, 40, has a philosophy about filmmaking that intersects with her identity. She identifies as queer ? she?s a woman, but she presents herself with many masculine characteristics. Her queerness for a long time was a source of struggle, something she says that all good documentaries need. That struggle has helped her become the successful creator and teacher she is today.

?I think the struggle is a gift,? Hermann says, ?because you instantly have this whole other relationship with the rest of humanity, where I think you can more easily tap into the shared humanity of people who are different from you.?

Hermann grew up in Baltimore with conservative parents ? ?old school,? she calls them ? Christian, but not the ?you?re going to hell? variety. They bought her baseball bats and footballs and were still surprised when she came out of the closet at 22.

But shortly before that milestone, they bought her the only thing she ever really begged for: a video camera. One of the first models for home use, it recorded to VHS and cost $1,200.

?That was a lot of money in the ?80s,? Hermann said.

She enjoyed making home movies, but she knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her mom did it; so did her sister. It was in her blood.

But she didn?t know she wanted to teach film until one day in 1992 in Charlottesville, Va. She was there for the Virginia Film Festival. Her professor for her documentary film class sent her. She was 19, and she and some friends filed into a cool theatre to watch the documentary ?To Render a Life? by Ross Spears.

The film is about the ethics of making the documentary: how to portray the lives of other people and the questions one grapples with in the creation process. All of that resonated with Hermann, but what sticks with her is one scene.

The film included the story of a family living in rural Virginia. They lived in a trailer with no air conditioning and a wood-burning stove. In one scene, the mother makes dinner for her family in a crowded kitchen in the middle of the humid summer, sweat dripping from her brow.

?It struck me,? Hermann says. ?It struck me with the humanity on display and how much I felt like I was really moved by the strength and power of this character. Those are the kinds of characters that interest me in my own work ? strong individuals persevering despite situations that are really difficult.?

Herman walked out of that theater knowing what she wanted to be when she grew up.

Today, Hermann is a faculty member and assistant academic director of the digital film and video department at the Art Institute, and she?s received the faculty of the year award. Hermann feels that her androgynous sexual identity has been more of an asset to her as a teacher than a detriment. As she puts it, she feels like she can ?be everything to everyone.? Women are grateful to have a woman role model in a field dominated by men, and the men see her as someone who is accessible and understands them.

?I feel in the final analysis, that being queer and a different gender somewhat, has actually improved my ability to relate,? she says.

Overall, Hermann says some of her proudest moments come when her students access the power she?s learned to find within herself.

?The students really see, in some cases for the first time, they really, truly understand how hard they can actually work,? she says, ?so they get this great sense of self empowerment and come out the other side of this really tough and difficult experience feeling great strength and power. And it?s all in service to this art form that I love ? documentary.?

Trans student strikes out on her own

As a child, Sabrina McCoy?s favorite movie was The Goonies. She liked it because the kids were just like her ? lower-middle class with quirky interests and big imaginations. Even the main character, Mikey, was asthmatic, just like her ? both of them carried around inhalers. Most of all, the kids didn?t apologize for who they were, even when others put them down.

The movie was formative for McCoy, 34, because when she was a child, she was a boy. She decided to transition to female six years ago, a decision that put her on her own adventure and changed life as she knew it. She quit her job, divorced her wife and moved to Portland, where she began a new career ? film. She now attends Portland State University, where she?s pursuing a degree in film production.

?They say entertainment is all escapist,? McCoy says, ?but when you?re growing up in a horrible environment and you don?t have a lot of support?that escapist type stuff is all you have.?

McCoy grew up in a conservative factory town, Rockford, Ill., just outside of Chicago. McCoy can point to clues that she was transgender as a child, like throwing tantrums when her mother would try to put her in ?boy clothes.? By the time McCoy was in college, she had figured out that she was gender variant. But because of her conservative surroundings, she says, she suppressed it. She finished college, got married, got a steady job and bought a house.

?But you can only put something in the back of your mind for so long before it basically breaks wide open,? she says.

The breaking point came for McCoy on Memorial Day on 2006. She was hanging out with her wife at another couples house watching anime. Between drinks, the women started talking about their likes and dislikes about bras ? which brands they like, which stores are better, how annoying iit is when the underwire digs in on one side.

What struck McCoy about this conversation was how easily and immediately she was able to jump in and contribute to it ? she had after all, been experimenting with cross dressing. But when she did jump in, she could practically hear the scratch on the record player.

?They looked at me and said, ?Wait a minute. How do you know about that?? McCoy recalls. ?And then a switch in my head switched over and I was like, ?Boom. I was female.??

What followed can safely be described as dramatic. McCoy?s wife already knew she was gender variant ? McCoy had told her before they got married ? but when McCoy decided to transition to female, her wife said she couldn?t be in a romantic relationship any more. McCoy?s revelation wasn?t the only thing that led to the couple?s divorce, to be sure, but it played a large part.

So McCoy started rebuilding what would be a new life for her. She met another woman online (McCoy identifies as a trans lesbian), and the two soon developed a long-distance relationship. After McCoy finalized her divorced, sold her house and tied up some other loose ends, she decided to move to be with her girlfriend ? in Portland.

?For me, a kid from Illinois, you grow up with cornfields and it?s flat,? McCoy says. ?The Pacific Northwest was sort of like this magical beautiful land of coasts and caves and hills and evergreen trees and absolutely gorgeous scenery. So it kind of became a dream of mine to be out here one day.?

Once in Portland, like so many others, she was unable to find steady work. Her main concern was medical insurance; since she was transgender, she wanted it as soon as possible. The easiest way to get it, she thought, would be to go back to school.

And while she was changing things up, she thought, ?I may has well go and study a new field to try and better my career chances,? she says. ?And I might as well study something I love.? She chose film.

When she graduates, she wants to create a documentary that shows transgender people in a positive light. Essentially, she wants to make the film she could have shown her parents when she came out of the closet.

?When I came out to my parents,? she says, ?they were like, ?What does this mean? How should we react?? I didn?t have any good answers.?

Her mom struck out on her own for information. She ended up going to a video store, where she was told to watch TransAmerica ? a film that for a mother learning what to expect from her child?s life, McCoy calls ?problematic.?

McCoy wants to make the film she could have shown her mother.

?I want to show that trans people can have relationships and jobs and that some of them do really great things,? McCoy says. ?Basically a documentary film that shows trans people living normally.?

Nat your average girl...: I Know Covetting is Wrong but...

I am totally obsessing over this home. I'm so excited about today's post! So, my friend Marie and I have known each other for a very long time. I recently met up with her at her new home to go for an evening walk and was blown away by her design expertise! I told her I HAD to do a post on her (mostly) wallet savvy shopping techniques. I refrained from taking pictures that day since it was my first time in her home, but promised I would be back later in the week to stalk her. :) (oh and I brought the wrong lens and I am terrible at using my camera anyway so I apologize for the dark photos.)

I'm convinced that if you splurge on a couple of main pieces in a room then it really helps everything else look like a million bucks. Marie invested in mirrors, lighting fixtures, and curtains but strategically mixed in lower cost pieces too. To me this is the epitome of a good designer. She sees potential in everything!

Marie is an incredibly brave, strong, and wise woman of God. This is her below with her boyfriend Brandon who passed away about eight months after this photo was taken (almost two years ago). He tripped one evening, hitting his head so hard that he went into a coma and never came out. And while I could go on about how horrible it was to lose him, it was amazing to see how God used him to reach out to so many people who didn't follow Him. Marie has already been through more than most people will ever go through and yet she is still one of my favorite people to spend time with. She's generous, warm, witty, and unpretentious. I love her! Thanks again for letting me intrude on your home. I'm totally obsessed. :)

PS B has her 4 month check up today. Praying for a healthy baby! Also, she has been sleeping through the night for about a week now! Shut up, I know right??!?!

Mortgage Refinancing Help Ahead? | Money Talks News

It?s now possible to find mortgage rates lower than 3.5 percent for a 30-year fixed mortgage. If your current rate is significantly higher, you could be thousands of dollars richer by refinancing. That is, if you can refinance.

Many homeowners today would love to refinance, but credit is tight, and so is equity. There are established government programs in place to help borrowers with certain types of mortgages in certain situations, but if you don?t meet the narrow criteria, you?re out of luck.

But if the White House has its way, that could soon change.

President Obama has proposed a plan to allow homeowners to refinance regardless of their mortgage type ? even if they?re underwater on the loan. Money Talks News founder Stacy Johnson recently scored an exclusive interview with HUD secretary Shaun Donovan about the proposed plan. Check it out and then read on for more information about the proposed program ? plus some info on the refinancing programs already available?

Click to play ?How to Refinance an Underwater House?

Now let?s add some additional information about the proposed plan, as well as other refinancing plans you may already qualify for.

If approved, the new plan will help all homeowners. The first part allows you to refinance any type of loan ? even if you?re underwater on your mortgage ? providing you meet a few requirements. According to the White House, homeowners will save $3,000 a year on average.

The eligibility requirements are listed on the White House Blog:

  • No missed mortgage payments in the last six months, and no more than one missed payment in the six months before that
  • A current FICO score of at least 580 (approximately 9 in 10 borrowers meet this requirement)
  • The loan being refinanced is not worth more than area median home values, as determined by?FHA-conforming loan limits
  • The loan being refinanced is for a single-family, owner-occupied principal residence (to be sure the program benefits responsible homeowners trying to stay in their homes)

The plan also calls for a more streamlined refinancing process. Homeowners will have a simplified application process, easier requirements, and no appraisal costs.

Unfortunately, that program will require Congressional approval ? tough to come by with today?s partisan politics. But if you need help now, there are a few refinancing programs already available?

1. The Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP)

The Home Affordable Refinance Program helps underwater homeowners with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages refinance into a better mortgage ? like refinancing an adjustable-rate mortgage into a fixed-rate mortgage, or refinancing from a fixed-rate mortgage to a new one with a lower interest rate. To be eligible for HARP:

  • Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae must own or guarantee the mortgage, and it must have been sold to them on or before May 31, 2009
  • Your loan-to-value ratio must be greater than 80 percent
  • You must be current on your mortgage with a good payment history in the last year
  • The mortgage can?t have already been refinanced via a HARP program. One exception: if it?s a Fannie Mae loan refinanced from March-May, 2009.

To learn more ? like how to find out if Fannie or Freddie owns your loan ? check out this story: More Help for Homeowners: HARP 2.0

2. Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP)

If you have a government-backed loan, but you?re behind on your mortgage payments, you may qualify for the Home Affordable Modification Program. While not a traditional refinancing program, HAMP readjusts your mortgage payments to a lower (and more affordable) rate. You may qualify for HAMP?if:

  • You have a mortgage backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, or a mortgage lender registered with the U.S. Treasury
  • You received your mortgage on or before Jan. 1, 2009
  • You owe less than $729,750
  • You have a financial hardship and are either currently delinquent on your mortgage payments or at risk of becoming delinquent
  • You have a job and proof of income
  • You haven?t been convicted of a felony related to finance or real estate in the last 10 years

3. FHA Short Refinance

If you don?t have a government-backed loan, you may qualify for a refinancing program that will lower your monthly payments. According to the Making Home Affordable site, the FHA Short Refinance program allows conventional mortgage holders to refinance to an FHA loan. Lenders must reduce the amount you owe to no more than 97.75 percent of the home?s value. You may qualify for the program if:

  • You have a mortgage that is not backed by the FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the VA, or the USDA
  • You are underwater on your mortgage
  • You are current on your mortgage payments
  • You meet standard FHA underwriting requirements
  • Your debt is less than 55 percent of your monthly income
  • You haven?t been convicted of a financial or real estate-related felony in the last 10 years

4. Traditional refinancing

While many lenders won?t refinance an underwater mortgage ? lenders typically require some equity in the home ? the current housing market has made some lenders more flexible. If you?re at risk of foreclosure, your lender may be willing to refinance your loan or give you another alternative to avoid losing your home.

The types of programs available (and the requirements) vary by lender.?The first step to refinancing your mortgage is to talk to a housing counselor. HUD provides housing counseling services for free. A housing counselor can help you determine your options, help you gather the paperwork you need, and help you create a budget to stay on track with your mortgage payments.

To find a housing counselor, use HUD?s Foreclosure Avoidance Counseling map or call 888-995-HOPE ? the toll-free service is available 24 hours a day.

How To Build Muscle Fast

How To Build Muscle Fast

In some point in our lives every one of us asks ourselves how to build muscle. There are tones of training routines that you can see every day when you are online, but all this information, confuses someone who just started building muscle or just trying to find the right training routine.

Best thing to do if you are new in fitness, and building muscles, is to stick to the basics in workout and diet. Here am going to explain how to do that simply and fast.

Exercise at GYM

In my opinion the easiest and fastest way to build muscle is lifting weights in gym. You can ask in your gym for a training plan. Also every gym has a trainer who will instruct you how to workout properly.

So the first step is to get a training plan. After that learn hot to workout properly. Here are some more tips and trick that you must follow.

Do basic workouts

It is weary important to do basic workouts which include many muscle groups. Including many muscle groups means doing basic exercise such as squats, dead-lifts, bench press and chin-ups. These exercises are best for building strength, and more strength means more muscles and muscle mass.

Do low repetitions

My advice would be to keep your repetitions at first 10-15 repetitions. Then after you learned how to workout properly and you muscles and joints get used to training, after about three weeks change your repetitions. Now keep your number of repetitions low, between 6-10 repetitions.

Increase weights that you are lifting

Also, after you learned how to workout properly, you must increase weight you lift. Increase your weight that much that your number of repetitions don t go over 6-10 repetitions. Increasing weights will help you to build more strength and muscle mass.

Diet to build muscles

The right diet is even more important for getting muscles than training. If you diet is bad, you wont get any new muscles, no meter if you are lifting weight. First thing you must do is to eat 4-6 times a day. Eat small meals. At breakfast eat complex carbohydrates. Such as oats. Throughout the day keep your protein intake high. Eat chicken, fish and turkey meat. They are full of proteins and have low fats.

The right combination of training plan, basic workouts, and the right diet will help you to get muscles fast.

Feel free to comment and ask nay question that you haw about exercise and diet.

(AP) ? The Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte Show is down to its last act at the U.S. Olympic trials.

The world's two best swimmers go at it in the 200-meter individual medley starting with preliminaries on Friday morning. So far, they are 1-1 against each other in thrilling races.

Lochte won their first showdown in the 400 IM on opening night. Then Phelps got revenge by winning the 200 freestyle on Wednesday.

The 200 IM is up for grabs.

Lochte beat Phelps in the event at last year's world championships in Shanghai while setting the first world record since high-tech body suits were banned. But the Floridian also has to swim the prelims and semifinals of the 200 backstroke ? he is the world champ in it ? on Friday, while Phelps only has one event.

"I have a hard double tomorrow," he said.

Lochte scratched the 100 freestyle final on Friday night to ease his schedule and focus on his stronger events. Matt Grevers also scratched, and their moves opened up spots in the eight-man final for Jason Lezak and Dave Walters. Lezak saved Phelps' bid for eight gold medals in Beijing with his anchor leg of the 400 free relay.

"He better owe me something," Lochte joked when asked about giving Lezak another chance to get back to the Olympics at 36.

The 100 free is loaded with Olympic medalists like Lezak, Nathan Adrian, Ricky Berens, Cullen Jones and Garrett Weber-Gale.

While Lochte advanced through the prelims and semis of the 100 free before bowing out, Phelps scratched the event altogether so he could steal a rare morning off. He spent part of Thursday in his hotel watching "Act of Valor" and ordering room service with training partner Allison Schmitt.

"We were able to just sit around and tell jokes," he said.

In the evening, he returned to the pool and easily won the 200 butterfly, his signature event and a favorite of his family since his two older sisters used to swim it, too.

"Very relaxing day. And yeah, I think it showed in the race," Phelps said. "I was comfortable. That was something that just helped everything, and hopefully will carry through the rest of the meet."

Phelps took the lead on the third lap and he finished a body length ahead of the field in 1 minute, 53.65 seconds, his easiest final yet in Omaha.

Phelps said he will have to go even faster in London to claim his third straight gold in the 200 fly.

"It's not a good enough time to win a gold medal, but I think I'm OK with it," he said. "Going into the last wall. I didn't want to have any close ones, so I tried to stay under as long as I could. Today was the best my stroke has felt throughout the whole meet."

Phelps' biggest challenge came at the end of the night when he visited the news conference room, where the air conditioning was cranked and cold air was blowing.

"Sorry, I can't even think right now, it's freezing in this place. Holy crap," he said, his arms wrapped around his shivering body, "and I just got out of a 48-degree ice bath."

Phelps' victory locked up his third individual event for the London Games, and he's got the 200 IM and 100 butterfly left in Omaha. That sets him up to swim eight events at the Olympics, including a likely spot on all three relays, and gives him a chance to duplicate his record from the Beijing Games.

On Friday, Eric Shanteau and Brendan Hansen are the favorites in the 200 breaststroke final, although Clark Burckle goes in with the fastest qualifying time. Teresa Crippen, sister of the late open-water swimmer Fran Crippen, has a shot at making the Olympic team in the 200 butterfly final.

The other Olympic berth in the 200 fly went to Tyler Clary, who finished second with a time of 1:55.12 on Thursday.

"It was amazing," Clary said. "I can't even put into words how the end of that race felt, not only the pain in the last 20 meters but just the complete and total turnaround."

Phelps' pal Schmitt was equally dominating in winning the 200 free. She broke her own American record with a time of 1:54.40, the best in the world this year. She had already won the 400 free here.

"I didn't feel like I was on my record pace, but I could hear the crowd," Schmitt said. "And when I touched and saw the flames go off I was pretty excited before I even looked up and saw the time."

Seventeen-year-old Missy Franklin locked up another Olympic race, claiming the second 200 spot in 1:56.79. She rallied from fifth place at the first turn.

Franklin already won the 100 backstroke and looks poised to have another huge performance in London, after breaking through at last year's worlds with five medals.

Dana Vollmer and Lauren Perdue finished third and fourth, assuring themselves of being in the pool for the 800 free relay. Shannon Vreeland (fifth) and Alyssa Anderson (sixth) also are likely to be taken to London as potential relay swimmers.

Caitlin Leverenz became a first-time Olympian with a victory in the 200 IM. She was dominating on the final two legs ? breaststroke and freestyle ? and pulled away to win in 2:10.22.

Ariana Kukors, who won gold in the event at the 2009 world championships and was third at last year's worlds, rallied to claim a spot on her first Olympic team, as well. She touched second in 2:11.30, just 25-hundredths ahead of Elizabeth Pelton, who led the first two laps but couldn't hang on.

Nora Ephron Dies at 71 | Women and Hollywood

I'm sitting here reeling from the news that Nora Ephron has died.? No one even knew she was sick and now she is gone.? The loss to movies, and especially to women in movies, cannot be underestimated.? This is a woman who was an Oscar nominated screenwriter three times over for Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.? Not many people can boast one Oscar nomination and she got three.? She was a successful writer who then at 50 became a director.? In a business that prides itself on youth, and precisely speaking, male youth, this woman decided to become a director after a successful career as a journalist and screenwriter.

I loved her debut film This is My Life.? I loved how bold and naive it was.? I love its honesty and its rawness.? I loved that it told a story of a woman's life.? I met her only once at a recent event where she spoke about the film with Lena Dunham and what I remember most was her pride when talking about Lena.? She was excited to see this young woman blossom.? She was excited to see the next generation of women directors.? She had already seen the whole season of Girls before any of us and she could not stop talking about how good it was.?

Nora Ephron was a woman who directed studio movies.? We can count those women on one hand.? She entered that club when she directed Sleepless in Seattle which she also wrote.? She stayed in that club throughout her whole career all the way to her last film Julie and Julia.? She prided herself in being a writer/director of films that talked about women.?? I'm sad that we will never get to to see her direct another film.? She had a Peggy Lee biopic with Reese Witherspoon in the works and also an adaptation of Lost in Austen.

We can't underestimate how important she was as a role model to women directors.? She got films about women greenlit at the studio level.? Not many women can say that.? The thing about her is that she was unafraid to write about women because that is what she knew.? Her book Heartburn is legendary.? She endeared herself to women when she eviscerated her ex-husband on paper and on screen.? She made many women love her because she made women and women's experiences matter.?? She wrote about and for a generation of women who grew up with feminism with all its pluses and the minuses and she made us women who were younger laugh about what was to come in our futures.?

Most of all she made women count in Hollywood. She was a feminist writer because she cared about writing about women when so few others did.?

One thing to remember is that she actually created some of the most memorable events in movie history.? The orgasm scene in When Harry met Sally.? Unforgettable.? The great radio conversation in Sleepless in Seattle.? She created Meg Ryan's career -- she appeared in four of her films -- and Meryl Streep was in three of them playing Nora's alter ego? in Heartburn and her heroines in Silkwood and Julie and Julia.

It's going to take a lot more a shocked two hours to put into writing the importance of Nora Ephron to women and to movies.

All I can say is that I am so sad as are most people I have been conversing with this evening.? This is a huge and devastating loss.

Google

Use the search engine to search for media sources. For example, if you want to reach media in your old home town, you can search Google for ?newspaper Indianapolis,? ?news Indianapolis,? ?radio Indianapolis,? etc. You can also search for terms like ?list of weekly newspapers.? My search for that term turned up a list for Los Angeles (http://www.laalmanac.com/media/me04a.htm) and a comprehensive list (minus contact information) here: http://www.xpresspress.com/weekly-newspaper-media-list.

Be on the Lookout

Whether you?re surfing social media or reading a magazine in your doctor?s office lobby, keep an eye out for reporters who write about topics that relate to what you do. Most reporters have a specialty area of focus. If a reporter writes about the stock market, he probably won?t be writing about the latest in cake decorating. So find the reporters who can connect with your message and reach out. Even if you?re simply offering a compliment on a great story with a quick note that says you?re available as a source if the reporter writes a follow-up article, you have opened up a line of communication. It might sound crazy, but reporters have databases of contacts and you never know when you might rise from the archives.

Check back for part 3 of this series, where I?ll cover how to contact internet media sources!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google co-founder Sergey Brin made a splashy entrance during a San Francisco conference while CEO Larry Page recovered from an ailment that has left him unable to speak.

Page's absence from one of Google's marquee events wasn't a surprise because the Internet search leader had announced at its annual shareholders' meeting last week that he wouldn't be attending.

Without providing any specifics about what caused the problem, Google Inc. said Page lost his voice. Although Page still is well enough to carry out his CEO duties, Page isn't expected to speak during a conference call planned next month to review the company's second-quarter earnings.

Brin told reporters Wednesday that Page is fine except for his inability to speak, which started a few weeks ago.

"He just needs to rest his voice," Brin said of his long-time partner.

Brin joked that Page might be an even more effective CEO because he is taking more time to choose his words. He declined to elaborate on what caused Page to lose his voice.

Even when he can speak, Page tends to shun the spotlight. He didn't appear at Google's annual "I/O" conference for computer programmers last year either. Google held last year's event less than two months after Page replaced his longtime mentor, Eric Schmidt, as CEO.

Brin, who started Google with Page in 1998, has never been a wallflower. He wowed a standing room-only crowd of about 6,000 people Wednesday when he jogged on stage to interrupt a presentation about a new feature on Google Plus, the company's alternative to Facebook's social network.

After apologizing for the disruption, Brin said he had a time-sensitive matter to share with the audience.

Moments later, he was immersed in a video chat with a skydiver that Google hired to jump out of a blimp above San Francisco to demonstrate the futuristic, Internet-connected glasses. The crowd was able to watch what it was like to parachute into downtown San Francisco through the skydiver, who was wearing a pair of the glasses, which Google has been developing for more than two years.

Most of the opening keynote at Google's three-day conference was conducted by lower-level executives.
